Throughout The 1800's and into the 20th century, hundreds of boarding schools were erected, their soul purpose being to assimilate Native American children into white culture. These schools were brutal and abusive of the indigenous children. The children in these schools were stripped of their culture, their freedoms, their language, and even their names. The conditions in these schools were not good and the children didn't have good access to education and health care. This problem of poor health and education conditions unfortunately still resides in America today. Native Americans living in reservations today are victim to a higher likelihood of dying from cancer, heart disease, or untimely accidents due to the geographical barrier often found between these reservations and accessible quality health care. Especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic, Native American communities are at incredibly high risk. Suicide rates are also significantly higher in these areas, especially among teenagers. The children in these areas also do not have the same access to quality education that the rest of the country has. A solution? The education and health care access in these areas, as mentioned previously, is very poor and when accessed is not always high quality. More development of those commodities in these areas would help a great deal to help people born in these communities receive just as many opportunities and choices as the rest of the country, without being forced to leave their homes or families.
