We need to help guide students into being independent and critical thinkers. We can help students learn how to set attainable goals and to plan out what they want to do and how to do it. Figure out what their end goal is, then break it down into multiple steps to make it easier to visualize and complete. Students learning how to peer-review and self-assess can also be monumentally helpful in helping them become more independent and critical thinkers.

A great resource is: "10 Effective Ways to Foster Students' Independent Thinking Skills"
https://wabisabilearning.com/blogs/inquiry/10-ways-foster-independent-thinking-skills

From a SPED perspective - independent work time can be a huge challenge/roadblock for students. Some need to be explicitly taught how to BE students and many, perhaps especially those that are fresh out of elementary school, haven't had opportunities or been taught how to be independent. It's important to be aware of this. We may need to provide some heavy supports in the beginning and slowly fade that support over time. Structure is super important. Making sure you are providing the appropriate accommodations (which is up to ALL teachers) is essential (your friendly neighborhood special education teacher will provide modifications - yes, there's a difference!) https://autismclassroomresources.com/why-structured-work-system/

There are a few strategies mentioned in this article, but one strategy I thought would be helpful for scholars is to use some of the extra time to give them the chance to self-assess. It's important for students to be able to demonstrate what they learned not only to themselves but to other students. More than just show what they learned, I believe that we can use this time to give students a chance to self-reflect and think about the work they did, if they're satisfied with the results, what challenges they faced during their work, etc. Being able to summarize their learning and identify what worked well for them as well as the issues they had in the process will be an incredibly beneficial skill as they continue on into college courses. The article also talks about setting goals and inspiring motivation, which go hand-in-hand with this idea.
