The development of the U.S. National Highway system has came a long way. From the time of the early American settlers to now, a lot about the U.S. road systems has changed. Dwight Eisenhower put in a lot towards the highway systems we have today. He had an experience with dangerous dirt roads in the past and decided to make a change, so he supported this cause and in 1954 the Federal-Aid act was passed with $175 million for construction of highways. Thanks to this the U.S. now has more than 46,000 miles of road.

This piece of text is about the history of U.S. highways. All of this happened from back in the 1700´s to now. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the person that made this happen. Why you ask? He knew the roads needed to be improved so he supported the federal highway act and eventually the roads were built and the highway system we have with almost 47,000 miles of road is flourishing.

For thousands of years, we have used roads as a way to get from one place to another, but back then they were just the footprints of animals that people followed to hunt. In 1795 the first hard surface road was built and was 62 miles long. President Dwight Eisenhower changed the way we travel because he experienced the dread of such terribly built bridges and dirt roads which just made the trip even worse. Luckily, now we have more than 46,726 miles of road for people to be able to get from one place to another quicker and easier.

Eisenhower traveled with his convoy across the U.S. and it took them two months . They had to cross crumbling brigs and dirt roads. The trip took longer than it should of and was very dangerons. Many people tried to get a nation wide road syestem but it failed for lack of funding. When Eisenhower was elected president he set aside los of funds to start building the road. He supported and funded the brige so much because he had expirienced it so he new how big the need was.
