GarageBand

GarageBand is an online music studio that would allow my students to make backing tracks for practice and performance. Similar to ProTools, it includes a large sound library of instruments. It would also allow students to play, record, and create original music. One of the units I hope to complete with this program in the future is having students create original background music for film clips or commercials. This is something I know my students would enjoy individually or in small groups.

Using Skype to interview or discuss music with a composer has been on my teaching bucket list for years! I have heard of a lot of ensembles saving money by Skyping with a guest composer, or having a composer who lives far away Skype in during a band or chorus class. Ideally, I would be able to get in touch with a composer of one of the pieces we are rehearsing and have the students prepare questions or comments before the call so the conversation is productive and educational. I would also like to try rehearsing with the composer via Skype. I know my students would learn so much about style, expression and the background of our music through this exercise.

Spotify

Spotify is another great website for having students create a playlist of music to share with their classmates/ ensembles. I want to use this to create playlists for specific lessons or units (dance music, jazz, classical, film music, video game music, school appropriate pop music, etc.) We could also use this site to compare and contrast cover versions of various music and view and discuss song lyrics. Organizing music through spotify would help keep all of the class music in one location so it is easier to find and listen to as a class.

I want to start using YouTube more in general music, band and chorus. Having students create YouTube playlists of; listening examples, possible concert pieces for band and chorus, and educational videos/professional performances to share with their fellow classmates would be a way to show students the musical and educational pros of YouTube. They could also utilize this website for videos specific to their instruments or voice for rehearsal, practice techniques and tips and tricks.

Smartmusic is music education website that allows teachers to select or create music for their students to practice, record, and receive immediate feedback from school or home. I have tried this a little bit in my band, but I would love to involve this program more in my 6-8th grade band and chorus (which I have not tried yet). This would be a great way to assess a large group of students on performance repertoire without wasting a lot of class time. It would also help students know exactly what they need to rehearse and help them develop a better practice routine.
