Operation Husky was the allied invasion of Sicily. It had a joint operation between American and British paratroopers. The American paratroopers did the first combat drop and the British processed shortly after by pathfinders. They were to mark landing zones for troops who were going to seize the Ponte Grande. During the drop the harsh winds scattered many paratroopers. They eventually regrouped at the sound of the other paratroops taking the Ponte Grande. Despite mishaps, the American and British airborne troops had a positive effect as small units attacked vital points and created confusion. Operation Husky would be the start of a Major Campaign to seize axis power in Italy.

For Operation Overlord, the US was able to deploy troops behind German lines to secure sights and watch flanks during the invasion. A total of 23,000 troops were used and 2,500 casualties. Their purpose was to destroy german forces and capture strongholds before the invasion on normandy. When they dropped, many regrouped into small groups and proceeded with their mission. This operation caused enough chaos to help the allied forces on D-day.

To what extent did technology and strategy affect the outcome of WW2?

Parachutes allowed militaries to deploy soldiers behind enemy lines and deploy troops at a fast rate. The strategies that would proceed would affect the outcome of each operation. Were so effective that paratroopers are still used today.

A short history

Leonardo da Vinci conceived the idea of the parachute in his writings, and the Frenchman Louis-Sebastien Lenormand made a makeshift parachute out of two umbrellas and jumped from a tree in 1783, but André-Jacques Garnerin was the first to design and test parachutes capable of slowing a man’s fall from a high altitude. They were first implemented into the military during WW1 in the form of paratroopers.
