  Ponyboy’s motivation is to win the affection of his eldest brother, Darry. Since the death of their parents, Darry has been supporting himself, Ponyboy and their other brother, Sodapop. Ponyboy feels he is a constant let down to his brother, who seems to be a harsh surrogate  parent. Ponyboy is anxious not to be a burden to his brother and his gang. “He's... I started to say he was a good ol' guy but I couldn't. I burst out bitterly:He's not like Sodapop at all and he sure ain't like me. He's hard as a rock and about as human. He's got eyes exactly like frozen ice. He thinks I'm a pain in the neck. He likes Soda--- everybody likes Soda--- but he can't stand me. I bet he wishes he could stick me in a home somewhere, and he'd do it, too, if Soda'd let him"(44

I suddenly realized that Darry was only twenty, that he wasn't so much older that he couldn't feel scared or hurt and as lost as the rest of us. I saw that I had expected Darry to do all the understanding without even trying to understand him. And he had given up a lot for Soda and me”(150).He is a round character, as you learn more and more about him as you traverse through the book.

As said from the personality test,”Mediator personalities are true idealists, always looking for the hint of good in even the worst of people and events, searching for ways to make things better." While they may be perceived as calm, reserved, or even shy, Mediators have an inner flame and passion that can truly shine. “Pony searches to make things better by resolving conflict. "They used to be friends, and now they hate each other because one has to work for a living and the other comes from the West Side. They shouldn't hate each other... I don't hate the Socs any more... they shouldn't hate...”

 Pony also looks for the hint of good in even the worst of people,like showing respect for Dally.” He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids--- he did everything. I didn't like him, but he was smart and you had to respect him.”
