Sometimes things you cannot control, such as your gender, can make you an outsider. However, you have to look past the differences to realize that we are all the same in the inside. With that, each individual is capable of the same things, but it is up to you whether you are going to accomplish it.

* A newly employed woman works a job at a pharmacy. She only has male workers and her boss is also a male. She does the same work as her coworkers. However, on pay day she discusses her earnings with a worker who then tells her that she is only making 80% of what he is! The pay is unequal. When she talks to the boss, she is told that she does not have the same skill level or attention span as the other men. Females are likely to get paid less because they are seen as vulnerable which makes them an easy target. Big bosses and cooperates use their power to their advantage; they pay women less, so that they can make more. Unequal pay is still a big issue that counties to feed the idea of gender inequality.

The differences between Scout, Jem, and Dill become a conflict and are surfacing a lot more. The ‘problem’ is that Scout is the only girl among her friend group making her different from the rest. This shows that life during the 30s was very different. There seems to be no unity and acceptance which leads readers to believe that the women were most likely oppressed during the beginning of the 19th century. As we see, Scout deals with this conflict by becoming distant with her friends. She still follows them to the yard, but does not play with them. She finds reassurance with Miss Maudie. Scout seems to gain a close, trustworthy friendship with the women.

This was very disrespectful and should not have been tolerated. The teacher got bullied by one over her first grade students. This happened and no one did anything. The teacher actually cried. If this little first grader could hurt a woman this much now image what grown men could do to women. This would never happen in today's society it would not be tolerated because women are now more respected. We are still not equal but there is more respect for women then there was in the 1930s. Women are still portrayed as the weaker in society and they still do not get equal pay for doing the same job. Gender norms have gotten better and now we can get our own jobs, be defined as our own person, and have our voices heard.

In this quote Jem had just told Scout to get out and kept trying to exclude Scout from everything that they were doing. Scout finally stood up for herself and said she had a right to do the same thing as him. This is more like today's society. Because of girls like Scout that would not take the inequality from the boys we now have a much better society for women and girls. If no one stood up to the men them there would be no changes and we would still lack the respect we deserve. Now we are still protesting and fighting for equivalent rights. Boys still may not how to treat women but they are learning.

This quote shows how Scout feels about being a girl. It is clear that she thinks being a girl is bad, while being a boy is good. In order to cover up her ‘badness’--which automatically comes from being a girl--she acts like a boy to cover this idea up. In the first five chapters, she had only associated herself with male friends. This exemplifies that either her personally matches well with them or that she got away with male friends because of her age. As she is getting older, she sees differences between genders. This is the direct effect from a society that preached the inequality of men and women. This easily reflects the life in the 1930’s because people raised kids on this. It had been forced into people minds that they were not equal and that men would always be better.

Here we see Jem get upset, so he calls Scout out on being a girl. The word ‘girl’ is used in a negative connation to show that she is different from the rest of the group. He insults her by bringing up the ‘girl stereotype’ type of argument. Scout obviously has been taught that being a girl is not good. For one, she is looked down upon because she is a girl. Secondly, she, so far, only has male friends. Life during the 1930’s was the reason to blame for these types of theories. Children learn from others as they are not born with knowledge. Women and men were not looked at as equal which influenced these types of thoughts and actions.

For Dill it was a big conflict that Scout was a girl. He didn't respect her and blew it out of proportion whenever Scout did or said anything he didn't like. If a guy said the same thing that Scout said it may have been considered, but since she was a girl it changed the whole thing. She was called a wimp for having an opinion. Scout didn't say anything back at the time and she just let them talk to her like this. This shows what happened in the 30s because if the men or boys would tell them rude things or verbally abuse them the women would just let them. They wouldn't say anything because they would be accused of lack of respect for the men.
