I was in Mrs.Whitfield's class at Nelson Elementary in Haysville KS for a year (2019). The grade level was 2nd & 3rd grade combined. Students would come in, in groups of about five or six and they would then seperate into their groups. I typically had the students for math and vocabulary.

Some strategies I learned while working with these students include the following: Taking it slow, these learners need time to process the information. Rushing to get the answer only makes them not want to do the work. All students deserve to work at their own pace. Another technique I often used is my language. I made sure that they fully understood what I was asking and even at times rephrased.

I believe every students has the right to learn. All students matter and deserve to be encouraged to reach their full potential. I honestly love working with Special Needs students, they are eager to learn and light up when they gain more knowledge over topics, it just makes you love doing what you do. As a future teacher I will put very little limitations on my students who may struggle and do everything in my ability to teach the way they are able to understand. Physical or mental, disabilities are not easy which is why I will choose to set my students up to achieve many things.

I had asked my sister to join me an "Acceptance Lesson" in a 5th grade class at Prairie Elementary. During our visit I discussed with the class what exactly acceptance is and how to show it within the school and out. I focused in on accepting individuals with disabilities to bring awareness. I spoke about Autism as well as Dyslexia. I wanted to express that even though people may look different they are humans just like us. After my lesson I had a few students from the life skills class come down to decorate cookies. The students got to choose a type of cookies along with frosting and sprinkles. This activity showed that like people, we are all made the same but with different features that make us unique.
We went to an FCCLA conference to present our lesson and took gold!

During my senior year of high school I decided to become a TA in our Special Education Classroom. This class was for student's with physical disabilities and others. I would go in every other day for about an hour an a half and help the students with their work and interact with students on their speaking devices. But it was more than just helping, it was building relationships. We would play Uno all the time, go on walks, etc. I was also a mentor in the club "Circle of Friends" and during the Christmas Holidays we would go Christmas shopping for our families!
