Since this is my first year teaching this course after 15 years in another, I just asked the students if they've learned this before or if this is something that they are interested in. They don't mind telling you their opinions on things.

I like to sometimes switch roles with the students and have the student teach the class what they learned about something maybe innovative that they have done or something new that they have done. So this supports their learning because we know that students who are able to teach have learned at a deep level. Additionally I can look at how they do things and watch reactions and maybe adjust my teaching style or even add something that a student did.
