Japan at that time was indeed colonizing Indonesia. However, they also experienced attacks from allies during the Pacific war. On August 6, 1945, the Allied bombing of Hiroshima took place. While in Nagasaki, the bombing occurred on August 9, 1945. As a result, 14,000 Japanese residents were victims of the incident. This is what made Japan finally admit defeat to the allies. In the aftermath of this moment, Japan also liberated Indonesia. The Japanese promised to read the proclamation of Indonesia's independence on August 24, 1945

On August 14, 1945, the youth group consisting of Sutan Syahrir, Chaerul Saleh, Wikana, and Darwis urged the old group, Soekarno and Moh. Hatta to immediately resume independence. However, according to the elderly, Indonesia must have a more mature strategy to carry out independence. Finally, the youth group kidnapped Soekarno and Hatta to Rengasdengklok, Kerawang, 16 August 1945 at 03.00 WIB. They urged to accelerate the proclamation of independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Then, there was an agreement between the old group represented by Soekarno, Moh. Hatta, and Mr. Achmad Subardjo with the young group about when the proclamation will be carried out.

The original text of the proclamation placed at the National Monument. The negotiations between the young and old groups in the preparation of the text of the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence took place from 02.00 - 04.00 in the morning. The text of the proclamation was written in the dining room at the admiral Tadashi Maeda Jln Imam Bonjol No. 1. The compilers of the text of the proclamation were Ir. Soekarno, Drs. Moh. Hatta, and Mr. Ahmad Soebarjo. The concept of the text of the proclamation was written by Ir. Soekarno himself.

In the front room, present B.M Diah Sayuti Melik, Sukarni and Soediro. Sukarni suggested that the sign of the text of the proclamation was Ir. Soekarno and Drs. Moh. Hatta on behalf of the Indonesian nation. The text of the Indonesian Proclamation was typed by Sayuti Melik. In the morning, 17 August 1945, at Soekarno's residence, 56 Jalan Pegangsaan Timur had attended, including Soewirjo, Wilopo, Gafar Pringgodigdo, Tabrani and Trimurti.

The event began at 10:00 am with the reading of the proclamation by Soekarno and followed by a short speech without text. Then the Red and White flag, which had been sewn by Mrs. Fatmawati, was raised, followed by remarks by Soewirjo, the then deputy mayor of Jakarta and Moewardi, the leader of Barisan Pelopor.

Initially Trimurti was asked to raise the flag but he refused on the grounds that the flag should be hoisted by a soldier. Therefore, Latief Hendraningrat, a PETA soldier was appointed, assisted by Soehoed for this task.

A young woman appeared from behind carrying a tray containing the Red and White flag (Sang Saka Merah Putih), which Fatmawati had sewn a few days earlier. After the flag flew, the audience sang the Indonesia Raya song. Until now, the heirloom flag is still kept in the National Monument Tugu Museum.

After the ceremony was over, approximately 100 members of Barisan Pelopor led by S.Brata came in a hurry because they did not know the sudden change of place from Ikada to Pegangsaan. They demanded that Soekarno repeat the reading of the Proclamation, but this was rejected. Finally Hatta gave them a brief message.

On August 18, 1945, the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (PPKI) made a decision, ratified and stipulated the Basic Law (UUD) as the basis of the Republic of Indonesia, hereinafter known as UUD 45.

Thus the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) was formed with sovereignty in the hands of the people, which was carried out entirely by the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) which would later be formed.

After that Soekarno and M. Hatta were elected on the recommendation of Oto Iskandardinata and the approval of the PPKI as the first president and vice president of the Republic of Indonesia. The president and vice president will be assisted by a National Committee.
