Today I want to teach you that readers pay extra special attention to the first chapter of a new book. After reading the first chapter, you can pause to retell the story: identify the main characters by name, describe the setting, and recall the important events that have happened so far. Then you can go back and reread to confirm all that information and check to see if you’ve missed something.

Assignment: Make a movie in your mind after you read (or reread) the first chapter of a book. Think, Who are the characters? Where are they? When is it? What are they doing?
