Throughout the short time the reader has known Gogol, he has maintained a calm and peaceful demeanor. However, minor decisions that Gogol makes can clue the reader into Gogol's personality. During his annaprasan, Gogol cries for one of the first times when he is "forced at six months to confront his destiny" (40). From this, we can infer that Gogol wants to make his own destiny later in life rather than being forced to make decisions at a young age. Before he was presented with the plate of items, he was obediently eating the food that was offered to him. With the plate, however, he has turned away, afraid of making a decisions. Gogol wants to forge his own path in life.

This is also seen in the quote preceding the novel by Nikolai Gogol stating that, "The reader should realize himself that it could not have happened otherwise, and that to give him any other name was quite out of the question." Gogol's namesake constantly challenged Russian beliefs and tradition through his manuscripts and religious beliefs. Gogol is also challenging Bengali traditions by turning away from the plate with the items as he is choosing to form his own destiny rather than picking an item that will set up the rest of his life forever. This relates to the quote as his name gives him a specific destiny to fulfill, a destiny not created by his parents or his culture, but a destiny created by himself.
