Hello there.... I am Sunita, you can call me Nita, living in Subang Jaya with my lovely mother. My father passed away (sadly) and I have an elder brother and sister. And many lovely nephews and nieces. I enjoy sports especially badminton and hiking and definitely reading books mainly in forensic investigations and historical romance. Professionally I am a nurse for the last 21 years, with a background in ICU, A&E, infection control, lecturing, administration, medical affairs and corporate. Currently I am engaged with IMU Bukit Jalil to build their hospital as a project manager overseeing the clinical elements. I am also assisting the existing clinics at IMU in enhancing the clinical services. And enjoying it..... and that's it all about me. Happy to meet new friends too in this group...

I was a Medical officer (medical department) back in Batu Pahat in year 2015, then transferred to Hospital Banting and worked as Quality Manager for 2 years -managing hospital admin, clinical services, handling medico legal and potential medico legal cases, hospital & patient safety. I am also qualified Occupational Health Doctor (OHD) by NIOSH and working as freelance OHD for part-time.

Hello Miss Ambi and fellow friends. I am Dr Siti Zufina. I have been in service for the past 15 years and previously worked in a hospital and klinik kesihatan, before being posted to my current place of work.

At present, I am working at Cawangan Kawalan Amalan Perubatan Swasta (CKAPS) or Private Medical Control Section, Medical Practice Division in Putrajaya. The Ministry of Health controls and regulates the private healthcare facilities and services in Malaysia, through Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998 and its Regulations, which are enforced by CKAPS and its counterparts at the states, UKAPS. We are also expected, to enforce Pathology Lab Act 2007 and Private Aged Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 2018, soon.

In addition to that, my work also involves giving input in the drafting of new laws or amendment of existing laws, e.g.
drafting of Pathology Laboratory Regulations (now in final stage at AGC), Private Aged Healthcare Facilities and Services Regulations and its Guidelines, Organ, Tissue and Transplantation Bill, Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill and amendment of Human Tissue Act 1974. At the same time, there are various government policies which impacted the healthcare industry in Malaysia directly or indirectly, for example autonomous liberalisation, foreign equities, online healthcare services and medical tourism.

Hence, I feel that there is a need for me to learn more about the law, in particular healthcare regulations and medical laws, to ensure that the ultimate goal of patient safety and quality of care is upheld while balancing the interests of the stakeholders.

I stay in Cyberjaya with my husband and two children. During free time, I love to bake cookies and watch movies. It has been great meeting everybody and I look forward to learning together :)

Hi everyone. This is Evelyn, currently a medical officer working in Radiology Department in Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (Klang). When I was a medical officer in oncology previously, a patient who loves to go doctor shopping wrote in to the local newspaper complaining how she was mistreated by the 3 government hospitals she discharged and revisited in less than a week. We had always known her being a very difficult patient hence, I was extra cautious and being extra nice to her. We ended the short but pleasant conversation, patient and her family even thanked me for being nice. Little did I know, the matter was brought up to state health authority and they demanded explanations. That's when I realized the importance of proper documentations and how communication can affect doctor-patient relationship. Becoming a doctor may not be my first choice but I remind myself everyday to live it up to my conscience. In order for me to do so, I chose to take up this course. I strongly feel we need a change in the system for a better working environment and to provide better services.

Good day everyone. I am Chew from Pahang, currently working in Department of Pathology & Blood Bank, Hospital Temerloh. I used to work in Medico Legal Unit in my hospital for one and half years. I am interested to learn more regarding medico legal, because I think it is important for healthcare practitioners to know more about this matter, so that can safeguard themselves during their practice and also able to provide better and fairer healthcare services to the public.

Hi there, am Jennifer from KL. Am attached with Parkway Pantai group. When I registered for HCML I was handling clinical risk management and medico-legal for the group. Am now posted to Pantai Hospital Cheras to manage hospital operations and to better understand the challenges at the ground. I truly believe that in our efforts to protect ourselves or our organisations from medico-legal risk, we should remember to be fair to our patients.

I have served in various departments during my 5 years in Govt Service. I have also worked for about 2 years in the Pathology Lab industry following which I have basically worked in Nephrology and Dialysis Services. I completed my MBA in Healthcare in 2004 and went into management in various Healthcare organizations such as Gleneagles Medical Centre, Fresenius Medical Care (MNC) and the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia. I have been fortunate enough to still spend about 20-30% of my time to be still involved in patient care. My last position in NKF was as their Medical Director and Head of Medical Department. I am very passionate about patient care and welfare and hoping that my knowledge in Medical Law can help improve the practice of Medicine by doctors in the currently fractured Malaysian Healthcare System.

Hello Dr Ambi and fellow classmates. I am (Dr) Mazeedah (can call me Maz) and I am currently working as a GP in a private clinic in KL. I graduated from Penang Medical College in 2003 (yeah, am not that young.. hahaaa) and had about 10 years of experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (trained in both Ireland & Malaysia). However, I did not complete my specialist exam due to unforeseen circumstances (too complicated for me to elaborate here). Following that I took up a part-time teaching job in CUCMS before committing myself to being a full-time GP. Having worked in O&G, the field with highest number of litigation cases worldwide, I was exposed to all kind of medico-legal issues. Public nowadays complained about almost everything. So I feel that we doctors must equip ourselves with legal knowledge not only to protect our rights but also to protect our patient's rights. Hence, I am shifting now to Healthcare & Medical Law. It's a pleasure to meet everyone and I hope we can help each other out in achieving what we are here to achieve. Looking forward to seeing everyone in class this coming Saturday.

Good day Dr Ambi and my fellow classmates! I am Weng Khong and currently working as a Senior Regulatory Affairs Associate in a Contract Research Organisation (CRO) - Parexel International. I am a pharmacist by practice and I graduated from Monash University Malaysia in the year of 2015. Prior to working as a regulatory pharmacist, I had two years of experience working in the retail pharmacy setting. With my current role, I assist multinational pharmaceutical/ medical device companies to obtain regulatory and ethics committees (EC/RA) approvals to conduct clinical trials in Malaysia and Singapore. Being in the clinical research field, I have undertaken the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course endorsed by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) and subsequently, GCP certified in order to further understand the nature of clinical research. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is an international ethical and scientific quality standard for the design, conduct, performance, monitoring, auditing, recording, analyses and reporting of clinical trials. It also serves to protect the rights, integrity and confidentiality of trial subjects. All clinical trials have to be conducted in accordance to GCP principles or otherwise, the clinical data obtained from the clinical trials will not be able to be used by the pharmaceutical companies in the applications of Marketing Authorization for their developed products. In addition, I also provide regulatory consultation services to our MNC clients in regards to pharmaceutical product development and regulatory submission strategy at regional level in obtaining marketing authorization approvals from Health Authorities around the world including US FDA, EMA and Australia TGA etc. Looking forward in meeting Dr Ambi and my fellow classmates during our first face-to-face class on this coming Saturday.

I am Kome. Although from Nigeria, I got my Doctor of Optometry degree from Ghana. I currently just study in Malaysia. During my few years of practice, which I felt was boring and did not fulfill my purpose of providing service, I observed doctors are still regarded as demi-gods in my country. Incidents from negligent acts are always seen as "the doctor's bad days" or "God's will being done" especially when there are signs like "WE CARE AND GOD HEALS" in front of the hospital. Even if the patient is aware there was negligence, there is fear of losing the litigation due to the doctor's connections. Also, I know income is one of the reasons why we provide our services, but I also feel it has become so much of a priority that we have lost all the ethical values of the noble profession. Lives have been lost as a result of refusing to treat because no payment/deposit has been made. I am taking medical law to create awareness to patients of their rights. To also contribute in creating policies that will regulate the services provided by health care organizations. Looking forward to seeing you all

The rewards may or may not come but the satisfaction it gives knows no bounds. Currently working as Medical Officer in Orthopaedic & Traumatology of General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. As a head of medical officer in my department my routine has always been hectic in managing and maintaining the quality and smoothness of the service of medical officers in the department. Surgical skills in fixing people has been imbedded well into my soul as it has been norm for me to cut people with the main purpose of fixing them. However, as times goes by, me and my team in HKL as the center of all referral centers in Malaysia which received a lot of complicated and complication case, made me realized that furthering Master in Medicolegal and Healthcare will benefit lots for my own self and the society. As you all can easily notice, Dr Abdullah is my best buddy and has been working together along side him in the department for more than 5 years. I hope all of us can go through well in this HCML course and be friends for many years later.

Thank you and pleasant in knowing all of you guys.

regards
Hannan Haziq

Hi everyone, I am Lee Lee, medical officer in Medicolegal Unit, Hospital Selayang. I graduated from Universitas Gadjah Mada in 2014. I am lucky to have the opportunity to work at the Land Below the Wind for almost 6 years before I decided to transfer back to Peninsular. I worked in Cardiology Department HQE II, KK Sabah for 3 1/2 years after completed 2 years of housemanship in Hospital Tawau, mainly involved in clinical and research works. I found my interest in medical ethics and law. I have done my 2-month attachment in Postgraduate program in Medical Ethics and Law in UiTM Sungai Buloh before I decided to embark on this field. That was the reason I applied for my transfer to Selangor and my wish is granted. I started my job in Hospital Selayang since July this year and joined medicolegal unit in August, and with God's grace, enrolled in HCML Bridging Program in September.

COVID-19 has its good side when people started to look at certain issues that have long been neglected. I am honored to be part of the Malaysian Bioethics Community which was recently established in March this year with the initial intention to discuss on ethical issues in COVID-19. (do check out our published work on COVID-19 at https://zenodo.org/record/3821126#.X7_vNUUzbIU. Haha!)

I believe that communication is an important skill to master. Things change if we are able to communicate effectively. I recently passed the assessment in mediation training, a 5-day training course organized by the Malaysian Mediation Centre. Though our country have yet the mediation pathway for healthcare, it helps to improve my communication with colleagues and family/friends.

Knowledge on law and ethics is not only to safeguard healthcare providers in pursuing our career, it reminds us on the fundamental purpose and principle of medicine. I hope to equip myself with professional knowledge on healthcare law and be able to think critically from both legal and healthcare perspective throughout this master program. Sometimes, I need stimulation and motivation to keep myself moving and progressing. Learning together with fellow classmates serve this purpose well!

(I think I have covered most of the aspect from the handy template on how to write a bio ;))

Working in Sabah has thought me a lot about different cultures and dealing with various health related issues which gives me a strong foundation to work here in Semenanjung. Exposure in ophthalmology has enable me to be involved in publications which has given me an insight on research. Both the department I’ve worked and working in deals with a lot of medicolegal issues which has created a special interest on this field. I am incharge of a Clinic in the Women Prison. I am currently responsible for the health and well being of 345 inmates and three children under my belt. Working in Prison teaches me a lot of new experiences which I doubt I can get the same experience elsewhere.

I am Dr Ramesh Joshi here. Graduated from Volgograd Medical University (Russia) in 2008 and was posted for my Housemanship in Taiping General Hospital since then. After completing it there did a few months of Emergency Medicine in the same hospital before joining the Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Department in the same hospital. Have been in the same department ever since till this very date. I just completed my Masters in Public Health from University of Malaya and completed my Occupational of Medicine from Niosh. Planning in pursuing forward with my PhD in Public Health after completing this Masters if everything goes well as planned.

Medical school and Law school. Most people assume that these 2 demanding courses of study are different and largely unrelated paths. However, the truth is that these fields are increasingly interlinked. In fact, medical students who pursue law are uniquely positioned to navigate the challenges of todays complex healthcare landscape. In order to truly understand the “big picture” of contemporary medicine, a basic understanding of health policy is also required. From issues pertaining to everything from intellectual property to medical malpractice issues, legal factors can make or break a patient’s healthcare experience. And while we often think of law as impeding medicine, it can also be used to improve it -- with access to the right information, that is.

While medicine can solve many problems, it cannot on its own behave ethically. And while the Hippocratic Oath holds physicians to a specific standard of ethical behaviour, the underlying issues are far from black and white. Navigating these questions of ethics can be vexing to physicians who lack the tools to manage ethical dilemmas pertaining to issues such as confidentiality, communication and cultural relativism. Not only that, but advancements in science, technology and medical research trigger new issues and ethical considerations every day. While these topics are complex, an understanding of the law and ethics can inform the decision-making process for today’s physicians.

Based on those principles and guidance which I picked up during my Masters in Public Health, have actually opened my eyes to further deeply understand medical law and that’s when I decided to join into this Masters of Medical law program to further learn those principles and to apply them when I practice as a Public Health Physician in the near future.

Thank You.

My name is Muhammad Hafiz bin Mohamad, a 35 year-old Medical Officer in Hospital Sungai Buloh. I have the experience being in the field of psychiatry for almost 5 years via experiences of being a Medical Officer in Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta and later on the Psychiatry Department of Hospital Sungai Buloh. The field of psychiatry is an interesting albeit also challenging field that deals with people with mental health issues that is currently on the rise worldwide. Relevant issues that are related to the field of Medical Ethics and commonly faced by the psychiatry healthcare staffs include the question of sanity and the mental state leading to voluntary or involuntary admission, issue of validity of consent to treatment as well as the conduct towards patients in detention in the psychiatric wards or institutions.
Currently for the past 1 year, I am currently in the Medicolegal Unit of Hospital Sungai Buloh. Mainly our job scopes involve the examining of medicolegal or potentially-medicolegal complaints of the patients or the family members and to conduct internal or external inquiries if needed. Apart from that, we are also involved in ex-gratia sessions as part of the alternative dispute resolutions within KKM as well as ensuring that the respective departments implement some improvement measures which are formulated from the findings of inquiries of the involved cases.
The medicolegal and medical ethics are fields which are increasing in importance and spotlight by the public and healthcare workers alike. As such, in addition to my interest in the intricacies and entwining of the aspects of law and medicine, I hope to further my career along the path of these fields and hopefully being able to contribute to the efforts of balancing the importance of patient safety and reasonable autonomy as well as in protecting and educating the healthcare staffs as well in the practice and exercising of their duties in medicine and healthcare.

I am a graduate from UKM and worked for the first 9 years of my career as an optometrist. Since then, I have gradually moved away from clinical practice, taking on more and more responsibilities in hospital management. I feel that my 'unique' background puts me in a position to see various aspects in clinical issues , taking into consideration the perspectives of the patient, clinician and management. My main role now is to oversee the clinical governance and compliance matters in the hospital; acting as a liaison between the Medical Advisory Committee, clinicians and the management. With this, I find that formal knowledge in medical law is essential and took the plunge to embark on the HCML journey this year.

I am Thiyagu Rajagobal, MBBS grad from AIMST University in 2008, currently practising in Columbia Asia Hospital Puchong since 2012. I am 37 this year and started my internship in UMMC for 2 years, followed by MO posting in Emergency department at Hospital Temerloh for 2 years and transfered to Anaesthesiology department in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, for almost 1.5 years before tendered resignation from MOH. From a resident medical officer, I was promoted to Chief Medical Officer 4 years ago and that is how I embarked into administrative role. I am the head of Emergency department and Medical Record department. On top of that, being a secretary in Morbidity & Mortality committee, I always come across with patient’s expectations and litigations. It creates interest for me to attend various Medicolegal conferences to understand better on how to approach medicolegal issues and to improve services in healthcare. And being in private medical centre, I wanted to enrol in a program that focuses on administrative role and here I am. My personal interest would be enaging in sports activities and travelling.
