Lesson Plan - Grade 1 Newcomers - Community 

CT state standards: CELP 1.2 

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to describe the location of places in the community.
Students will identify the location of places in the community. 

Key Vocabulary:  School, fire station, supermarket, park, hospital, post office, bank, police station

Community Places - Language development book - Page 93

  1. Show pictures of the community and explain to children that today we will discuss different places in our community.  
  2. Have students read out loud the chant depending on their assigned part. *bold, italics, underlined.  * QTEL strategy - 4 voices    Have pictures/puppets displayed of nurse, busdriver, and mail carrier.
        
       Who works in a hospital?
I’m a nurse.
I do! I do!
       Who works on a bus?
I’m a bus driver.
I do! I do!
        Who carries the mail?
I’m a mail carrier.
  I do!  I do! 

  1. Display newcomer card: What do you see?  Children name things and places they know and see on the card.  Then point to and name each place in the community.  Have children repeat.
  2. Say these sentence frames as you point to community places.   Where is the _____? (fire station)  It is next to the ________.  (post office)  
  3. Say the sentences again while writing them on the board, completing the name of each place.  Have children repeat after you.  Then point to the fire station and ask.  Where is the fire station? The students answer,  It is near the park.  Repeat for other community places on the card, in the vocabulary list and those children provide.

  1. Assessment : Complete page 93 . Draw a place in your community. Then write the name of the place.  



Lesson Extension:   Read the community helpers poem. Identify the helpers names on the top of the sheet.  (Posted to the top of page)
