The Triangle Shirtwaist factory was in Manhattan, New York . This tragic fire was started by no other than cigarette , because giving people cancer isn't doing enough harm . But wait before we get into that lets discuss the factory before the fire . This building was 10+ stories high and incredibly dangerous. Now i'm not saying the roof was caving in but it just wasn't a safe place. There were a total of 600 employees who were young women immigrants . The bosses were Max Blanck and Issac Harris . MURDERERS ! That's what they were. They not only changed the clocks ahead to give them shorter lunch breaks but also moved them back to make the women work longer without pay . These women were paid a maximum of $15.00 a week which honestly isn't that bad but its not enough to support a family which is what most of these young women had .

Factory fires were not uncommon for Blanck and Harris in fact some believe that they would purposely start a fire just to get the fire repair insurance . Some even say they bribed government officials to " look away " The fire its self was caused by a cigarette bud that was still lit when it was thrown on to a bucket of greasy , flammable cloths . Within minutes the factory was en-golfed in flames . To make things worse Blank and Harris REFUSED to install a sprinkler system but that's just the beginning . The fire hose was rotted causing it to fall apart , the single fire escape was poorly made and snapped , elevators could only hold 12 people at a time , the doors were locked from the outside to prevent theft by the workers and the two stairways were awfully crowded.

This is actually the 3 time this factory caught fire . It burned 2 in 1902 but those fires were not severe and everyone lived . The reason this fire is so famous is that 148 people died and many others were injured . 49 workers burned to death / inhaled too much smoke , 36 jumped down elevator shafts , 58 jumped out windows . The other 5 died from injuries . The employees and bosses who were on the top floors above the fire, escaped to the roof and from there they got onto the roofs of neighbouring buildings.

Over 80,000 people attended a protest to get Blanck and Harris in jail for murder. Thankfully the government agreed and they were arrested for manslaughter . Though the people were happy that they were being put in jail the agonising pain of losing there loved one aged on and stuck with them until they were reunited at death. This horrible tragedy ended with the government opening there eyes and start producing safety laws for factories and being more percausious about the working conditions and pay.

The government was "blind " because they let these two horrible men treat the employees the way they did and not keeping the factory safe . Blanck and Harris should have not got a licence to own a factory because they were crooks . This topic really struck me in 2 ways

1: immigrants come to America to escape whatever was / is going on in there home country but they end up getting treated worse ande judged on there looks .
2: What about if pv was on fire and your best friends didnt make it out wouldn't you be upset and suing the district because it was a unsafe building.
My point is immagine how everyone who experienced the fire and the families / friends of those who both survived and died in it.
