An environmentally friendly and affordable substitution for the conventional centrifuge would be the Paperfuge; doing essentially the same technological work as the centrifuge, the Paperfuge does not require electricity, no follow-up costs, and is an extremely cheap alternative - 20 cents to be exact.
Almost designed to be a children's toy, this effective innovation can be easily operated by pulling on two strings attached to cylindrical device, which in turn will induce high-speed spinning - approximately 125,000rpm - that will separate elements within the blood.
Being able to diagnose deadly diseases such as HIV and Malaria, this innovation is an incredible invention as it can save the lives of those who cannot afford to sustain the advances of a modernized centrifuge; in third world countries with no electricity, water, infrastructure, it is nearly impossible.

"More than 95% of HIV infections are in developing countries, two-thirds of them in sub-Saharan Africa, where over 28 million people are living with HIV" (HIV/AIDS, n.d.)
With an HIV epidemic occurring in third world countries, this innovation can help stop the spread of this disease by decreasing likelihood of contamination.
With such a low cost, the Paperfuge can be attainable in virtually every country, and can withstand drastic measures such as extreme climate, poor infrastructure, etc.

With Hamilton being a traditionally urban city, it may be impractical to use the Paperfuge within the city's hospitals and laboratories. Though this innovation could be used within our community, a modern centrifuge would potentially be a more practical technological advantage, as the Paperfuge can only identify 1 plasma at a time, making it time-sensitive.

For as cheap as 20 cents, the Paperfuge virtually diminishes the need for modernized technology when it comes to identifying blood-illnesses. For third world countries, this is a revolutionary step in diagnosing and ending major diseases - diseases in which are turning into epidemics.
