         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Tracking progress and grades:&nbsp;</p><ul><li><p>Newcomers generally do pretty well in class because of the leniency(Newcomer Grading Policy) and support of the teachers + paras</p><ul><li><p>Newcomers don't usually pass ELPAC</p></li><li><p>take 3 years of newcomer classes, then move onto regular ELD in highschool or AVID Excel in middle</p></li><li><p>Pass rate for newcomer: 8 out of 50 long-term ELs or 70+ ELs in total</p></li></ul></li><li><p>Long-term English learners (born and raised in CA usually), don't do as well academically</p></li></ul></li><li><p>Serving EL students</p><ul><li><p>&nbsp;teach the newcomers for Periods 1 (ELD I, which is more literature and grammar-based), and 2 (ELD II, which students work on assignments or get additional support lessons for their core classes)</p></li><li><p>newcomers are divided into clusters where they can learn in their core classes with some of their peers and with the support of a paraeducator.</p></li><li><p>long-term ELs are in AVID Excel</p></li><li><p>Spanish speakers: tend to have difficulty in reading, writing and listening but tend to do better in speaking English (the language proficiency is spanish is sometimes lacking with advanced academic language)</p></li><li><p>ALL take ELPAC in Spring</p></li></ul></li></ul><p>SOURCE: ELD Coordinator, Anthony Nguyen</p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>
