In Africa, the diamond miners aren't just adults, but also children. About 46% of workers in Africa were between the ages of 5 and 16. These children can be toddlers or teenagers, doing the same work as adult miners. They work long hours of back-breaking work. Compared to adults, the children are more vulnerable to injuries. Because of their size, children will most likely be given the most dangerous jobs such as entering narrow mine shafts or descending into pits, being vulnerable to death from a landslide. The children don't usually go to school, and usually grow up to continue mining in pits.

The workers who find the diamonds in Africa are payed less than a dollar a day. The diamond industry usually gets around 18 billion dollars every year. The worker that finds a diamond is payed a small amount more than the rest of the workers, but only for a day or so. Their hopes of getting rich are crushed when they realize how corrupted the diamond industry is.

Many workers work in dangerous conditions. The pit workers will scrape their limbs on the rocks and dirt, and without proper sanitation, will die of infections. The workers deep in the mines also work in dangerous conditions. In small-scale diamond mining, many people working are without proper training or expertise. The miners lack the necessary equipment to be working in the mines. Most deaths are caused by landslides, mine collapses, and other accidents. If the parents do not do what they are told to do in the diamond mines, their children's limbs may be cut off.

Many towns contract diseases from the pits they build to mine for the diamonds. In Sierra Leone, miners have littered the land with thousands of abandoned mining pits. These pits fill with rainwater, become infested with mosquitoes, and are turned into breeding grounds for Malaria, a disease that infects the blood, leading to various symptoms.

HOW WE CAN STOP IT

We can stop child labor and blood diamond mining by figuring out where the diamonds we buy come from. If they come from a diamond mining industry in Africa, they probably used child labor and pay their workers less than a dollar a day. If no one buys diamonds from those companies using child labor, they may realize what they are doing is bad and making them lose money, leaving them to make the choice of whether to pay their workers more and let them live better lives, or just decide to go bankrupt and lose every cent.

We as americans buy, and buy, and buy. We buy diamond rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, etc. When we buy those items with diamonds in them, we do not realize that some of those diamonds may be blood diamonds. We do not know if the diamonds have been mined in Africa, the US, Russia, etc, and most people do not care. We as a people should be better about knowing where our items come from, and if they came from a good place or a bad one.
