I have already begun to apply this knowledge to my graduate-level assignments. Rather than viewing the age gap among students as a deficit, the reading specialists and I looked at it as a strength. We had older students who were able to serve as a mentor for younger students. More importantly, there were so many unique ideas and perspectives shared among the group. An incoming third-grade student and fifth-grade student became best friends during camp. It was fascinating to see the difference in students' thinking, as it was beneficial to the whole group. When I have my own classroom in the future, I will be sure to make it inclusive and encourage students to share their funds of knowledge with their peers.
