According to Austin and Pisano (2017), "Neurodiverse people frequently need workplace accommodations, such as headphones to prevent auditory overstimulation, to activate or maximally leverage their abilities." Educators must be aware of how critical it is to provide students with accommodations that are going to set them up for academic success. In order to do so, they must consider the interests and needs of each student.

Wells (2020) stated, "Neurodiverse conditions offer workplace advantages if the individual is included in the most appropriate way." In order to provide an inclusive education for all students, educators must recognize student barriers to learning. A main barrier is the idea of social expectations. Our society fails to to put the child first. In order to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment for students, educators must understand how critical it is to put the child's experience at the heart of learning.

According to Day-Duro et al. (n.d.), "Rather than requiring treatment or a cure this kind of human specificity is understood to reflect a different way of socializing, communicating, or sensing." As an educator, it is important to understand that every students' brain is wired differently. There isn't one "normal" way of learning. Using the Universal Design for Learning framework will allow students to construct knowledge in various ways.

Learning how to create accessible materials has made an impact in my life as a student and teacher. I have already begun to apply this knowledge to my graduate-level assignments. In the future, I plan to create accessible content for students, whether it is on a word document, PowerPoint presentation, audio recording, or video. This will allow all students to learn the content in a way that fits their needs.

I applied the idea of inclusive teaching to a summer literacy camp I ran in Philadelphia. Rather than viewing the age gap among students as a deficit, the reading specialists and I looked at it as a strength. We had older students who were able to serve as a mentor for younger students. More importantly, there were so many unique ideas and perspectives shared among the group. An incoming third-grade student and fifth-grade student became best friends during camp. It was fascinating to see the difference in students' thinking, as it was beneficial to the whole group. When I have my own classroom in the future, I will be sure to make it inclusive and encourage students to share their funds of knowledge with their peers. Inclusive teaching creates a fun and engaging learning atmosphere for all students.
