  • Positive correlation between smoking cigarettes and lung cancer 
  • The cells in the lungs are damaged when a smoker inhales the smokes as its full of carcinogens.
  • At early stages the body may be able to repair the damaged cells but if smoking continues, more normal cells become damaged, then cells act abnormally and cancer develops.
Types
  1. Small cell lung cancer- usually occurs in heavy smokers
  2. Non-small cell lung cancer
 

Causes of lung cancer:
  • Smoking 
  • Exposure to smoke, radon gas, asbestos and other carcinogens.
  • Genetics



Complications/Symptoms:
  • Breathless
  • Coughing blood
  • Pain
  • Fluid accumulated in the pleural cavity
  • Metastasis- spreading of cancer to other parts of the body
Prevention 
  • Don’t smoke/Quit smoking
  • Avoid passive smoke, radon and carcinogens 
  • Have fruits and veggies
  • Exercise

Lungs are spongy organs where exchange of gases take place.
Lung cancer is uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, usually in air passages, in either of the lung.
As tumours grow, they undermine their lungs ability to provide efficient exchange of gases.

Causes
-Carcinogens, which are are cancer causing substances, damage the lung tissue causing it to act abnormally

Types of lung cancer
-Malignant tumours: these spread through the other part of the body through blood stream and lymphatic system.

-Primary lung cancer: originates in the lung whereas secondary lung cancer starts somewhere in the body and metastasizes and reaches the lungs.

Symptoms
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Hoarseness of voice
- On-going cough
- Losing weight

Prevention
- Do not smoke
- Avoid carcinogens at work


Emphysema
It is an irreversible lung condition in which the alveoli lose their ability to contract after expanding, this leads them to be filled with air thus leading to burst. This makes breathing difficult and O2 in blood stream decreases.

Smoking
Passive smoking
Air pollution
Marijuana smoking

Symptoms (seen only after 50% damage)
- Coughing
- Chest tightness
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Excessive mucus production

Stages
- At risk- Normal breathing - ongoing cough and more mucus produces
- Mild/ early- breathing with mild air flow blockage, ongoing cough , more mucus production.
- Moderate- Medical attention is needed, decline in airflow, shortness of breath during activities.
- Severe - Breathing test show severe limited air flow.

Lung cancer:
Uncontrolllable growth of cells (tumour) and the lining of lungs get damaged due to excessive smoking, radon exposure and carcinogens. Small cell lung cancer is normally what heavy smokers suffer from, wheras, small cell lung cancer can affect non-smokers (second hand smoking) as well. metastisis is a condition where the tiumour spreads because of the nutrition required for the cancerous cells to grow. affected organs increase from lungs to adrenal glands, brains, bones, and liver. . Pleural effusion is also a severe condition when fluid surrounds the lung and causes it to collapse . Symptoms include: Shortness of breath, chest and bone pain, weight loss without trying, headaches. You can prevent these diseases by not smoking and incorporating healthy habits in your daily routine.

lung cancer
a type off a cancer that begins in the lungs. lung cancer its the lading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. the risks increases with prolonged used. lung cancer claims more lives each year than do colon, prostate ovarian and breasts cancer combined.
_ there are 2 types of a cancers- 
  • Small cell lung cancer occurs almost exclusively in heavy smokers and is less common than non-small cell lung cancer( related to all types of smoking )
Non-small cell lung cancer is for several types of lung cancers that behave in a similar way. Non-small cell lung cancers include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
                      Signs and symptoms of lung cancer may include:

  • A new cough that doesn't go away
  • Coughing up blood, even a small amount
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Hoarseness
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Bone pain
  • Headache

as you age your chance for getting emphysema.  individuals over 40 are at the highest risk of getting this disease.

complications
1. holes in lungs due to bursting of the alvioli
2. infection due to excess mucus

6.  reduces standard of living
