A suspect was introduced to the case. Paul Flores, with many nicknames including Scary Paul, Chester the Molester, and more. Kristin, Paul, Cheryl Anderson and Tim Data were all together leaving a party they had all been at on May 25, 1996. While walking back to the dorms Tim separated from the group first. Cheryl then separated from Paul and Kristin just 300 feet from Kristin’s dorm. Paul was the last person seen with Kristin Smart after the party and before she went missing. Interviews with women who had gone to high school with Paul revealed he had always been seen as a creep, stalking random women always flirting with them, trying to kiss them and touching them at parties, so it was said if anyone did something to Kristin, it would have been someone like Paul.

On May 27th Paul was arrested for a DUI and was photographed with a black eye and fresh scratches. This was right after Kristin went missing making these injuries suspicious.
He told the police three separate stories about how he got these injuries. First, he tells them he got them while playing basketball with a friend, Jeremy Moon at an elementary school, that day before the mugshot. They bring his friend Jeremy in, and he tells the police that he saw Paul before Monday and he already had the black eye, so Paul suddenly changes his story telling them that he sustained the injury at 2:00 AM on Monday morning but this was still after he say Jeremy on Sunday. Then he changes his story again, claiming that he got it from slamming his head into his truck steering wheel while trying to take out his radio.

Connection: Kristin and Paul’s Black Eye

Paul Flores’ story on how he got his black eye does not make much sense along with the fact that he keeps changing it up. He even admitted to the police that he lied about his story on how he got his black eye. This raises the question, how did he actually get all the scratches and the black eye? It makes sense that if he did abduct Kristin that she could've been fighting and resisting him resulting in her scratching and bruising Paul.

The Cadaver dogs are trained to alert at the scent of human remains and they were organized to go to the dormitories at Cal Poly on June 29. They go through each dormitory before one of the dogs alerts her owner to room number 28 and the other dogs alert to the same room. The team goes into the room 3 of the dog's alert to the mattress on their own, the dogs then sniff out multiple other places in that room that all happen to be on one side of the room, Paul's side

Many people called Paul Flores "Chester the molester because of his weird behavior around girls and he would flirt with them and grope them. This activity isn't normal and makes Paul more of a suspect especially since he was left alone with a drunk girl. The night that Kristin went missing at the party, a witness says that they say Paul flores lying on top of Kristin, but they weren't sure if it was an accident or not. Based off the previous information that we know about Paul and his relationship with women, it was most likely not an accident. Its reasonable to assume in this situation that Paul took advantage of Kristin being drunk which is now why he is a suspect.
