Reading the articles, I realized that communication is not just oral, but, also body languages and your tone of voice. How you present yourself, how you talk and your gestures can make an impact towards the audience. Better presentation gives a more lasting impressions, better pronounciation and louder voice gives engaged the audiences more. Using the appropriate language is also one of the ways to captivate the audiences. I realized I have to choose proper ones, even if the two words are just synonyms, slight difference give better information to the audience.

There are 11 speaking competencies that can help us to further improve our communication in English. All eleven can be expanded, adjusted and applied accordingly. Speakers should master all eleven competencies to present better and make the presentations more interesting. Ideas should be well expanded and given a closure in the conclusion as to make the audience understand us better. Visual 🤬 are useful for a more interesting presentation. A speaker must also have a convincing persuasion to convince audience to accept their ideas and consider them instead of rejecting them outright.

Based on what I've read, now I realized that speaks in a monotone voice is one of the characteristics of an ineffective speaker.

From the text, overall, the text is quite easy to be understood. The notable tips that come to my mind are when using useful topic, be organized and has engaging introduction. You must know your intended audience and what the purpose of the speech so that you can plan the suitable topic for the audience, and plan the introductory speech to catch the audience’s attention. Make sure that the speech is organized from a part to another part. I am pretty sure that by practicing all the tips, the beginner speakers can become a better speaker.

From my reading I think for one's to speak competently they need to include all the 11 elements of speaking competencies. For me the most important element is that we need a clear organization of our main points of the speech. A clear organization will not only help the speaker to deliver his or her main points effectively but also will help the listener understand clearly what points that the speaker is trying to deliver.

Hi, everyone, I’ve been speaking for presentations since school, but to be the truth it just the way that I speak in front of the class for the purpose of education materials and sometimes in makes me nervous because I do not have the proper ways of delivering speeches to the audience. After reading these 11 competencies of speaking, I have to realized that I’m lacking in many ways despite the fact that I have been speaking in front of other people for years during my studies back in school, diploma and now pursuing my degree. It is important to analyse intended audience and choose a proper topic to be delivered because only then the audience will be able to understand and focus to our speech. And the help of the presentation slides are actually makes the whole speech becomes more fun and interesting with pictures, videos and lots of colour. I hope that I can finally improve on my speaking skills and also my confident to speak with other people…..

From the article I’ve read on speaking competencies, there are some standards outlined in helping speakers to deliver better speeches. From previous read, it is important to find proper ideas and useful topics in order to convey messages to people especially when the topics are not familiar to them. Not just that, a speaker also needs to provide good introductions if he/she wants to engage the audiences into the speech. A good attention-getter will definitely raise the curiosity and interest of the audiences to the topic. Aside from that, being organized while delivering is also crucial to avoid confusion among audiences. After that, speech should also be supported with well supported ideas or evidences, and finally the conclusions. As an extra note, to be a good and competent speaker, one must be able to communicate clearly, have subtle vocal expression, good nonverbal gestures, adapted to the audience (in other words, provide two-ways communication where necessary), and provide convincing persuasions.

Based on 11 speaking competencies that i’ve read, i agree that it is really important to use a suitable voice expression as we speak to audiences. By using suitable voice expression, it is more clear for them to understand our purpose of speech and more convincing compared by using some fillers in speech which make the speakers look unprepared and unknowledgeable with their own speech. The more we practice, the more we are able to deliver the speech really well.

From the article that i’ve read on speaking competencies, all the standards given are very effective in becoming a good speaker. It gives me ideas on developing my communication competence as well as enhancing my confidence in giving presentations or any speaking situations. Throughout the article, i believe that in getting audience attention, we need to be more persuasive and always give supporting ideas, being engaging is the key. Our speech need to be well organise, clear and consistent. We need to use vivid language as it really helps sketch images in the audience’s mind on what the speaker engaging to. Visual 🤬 and nonverbal communication also attract audiences eye as well as it will show enthusiast by the audience and it will give a huge different when you are giving a speech. Filler words usually come into use due to nervousness, we need to be more confident and practice our speech more to avoid using fillers. Last but not least, every speech need a closure. A good closure can be lasting in audiences mind, one need to give a clear thesis of the topic so the speaker can achieve the target of the speech.

Audiences may not have the same way of my thinking but everyone has the rights to think and say differently. Though everyone has it, i think the ideas and thoughts should be on tracked, controlled and not getting out of topic. Overall, speaking your mind out may produce something new or even build a community up. So why shut, say it out loud.

Upon reading about the 11 speaking competencies, I have come to acknowledge that speakers should select a suitable topic according to the target audience and also the occasion of the talk. The topic also should be up to date and original in order to make sure the audience will enjoy the topic spoken. We need to have an engaging introduction so that audience will be interested to hear what we want to talk about. Next, we should speak in an organized and clear manner when delivering the speech. Effective transition and signposts are also crucial to make sure the speech flow well. As a speaker, we also need to provide excellent support and sources when delivering a speech. A clear summary of the points of the speech spoken, appropriate usage of language that are free from any grammatical errors and bias also have to be provided when we are giving public speech. Furthermore, as a speaker, we must have varieties of vocal expression to make the audience engage in the topics spoken and a natural body posture, gestures and facial expression also must be applied when giving speech. Adequate eye contact between us and audience are crucial too. Next, we must present visuals to aid in guiding audience in understanding the spoken topic and when speaking, we should address the important points of their speech in a clear, compelling manner with reliable sources and evidence. In summary, a great speaker has to consider many different aspects in order to deliver a great and influential speech to the audience.

Among all these speakers, I can observe that beginning and ineffective speakers will apply the 11 speaking competencies in their speech poorly or they might not apply one of them at all. Different from advanced and effective speakers, they are able to master the 11 speaking competencies very well that makes their speech become attractive to the listeners. As for myself, I would put myself in the category of beginning speakers. I noticed that I stll lack a few of speaking competencies and the articles did help me to recognize which competency I need to develop in order to be a good speaker. Not only that, I can also conclude that it is significant for a speaker to prepare a speech that the audiences want to hear rather than choosing cliché topics that are commonly heard.

From the video, I can conclude that, filming ourself with a camera/video cam while delivering speech is just as important as filming the audience while they are listening to it. So why do we need to film the audience too? Simply because it actually helps us to know and learn better from the audience's reactions and responses. From the change of the audience's facial expressions and body movements, we can actually gain lots of feedbacks from it. With that kind of feedbacks, it could really help us as a speaker to be a better speaker in the future.

Responses on the video (Darren Tay)

Basically, responses or feedback from the audience also play a crucial thing in delivering speech. Even for me, it is quite a new thing, when you should record the audience instead of recording the speaker. Usually people record themselves to analyse which part that should be improvised in order to excel as a speaker. From that video, I think it is a brilliant tip from the speaker. We need to know what the audience intend to listen not exactly focus on what we want to deliver. By recording the audience we can see their facial expression and even the body language that actually can help the speaker to identify how well their delivery grab the audience’s attention. So the, speaker can improve on how to attract the audience’s attention by watching the recorded video after their presentation or speech.

After watching the video, I realized that by filming the audience when we give speech helps to improve the way we delivered it. The live feedback from the audience (as mentioning in the video) are meant to be the measurement for us to improve every time we want give speech. We know how to engage with the audience more and learn the effects we have on the them.

After I watched the video, I now learned that as a speaker, we can use a video camera to record our audiences. The recording can be use later in order to evaluate our previous speech. We can look how the audiences react when we deliver a point, a joke, or whatsoever. This then can improve our speech delivery as now we know how the future audiences will react if we do the same thing again. So by recording the audiences, we can make a guideline of dos and don’ts when we do a public speaking.

I realize something after watching the video. Before this, i had never ever thought about recording my audience while giving speech. For me, it is also the best way to know whether your audience focus or not to what you have delivered earlier. It is same with feedback. By doing this, we slowly can improve our speech deliver and know how to tackle our audience in the future. :)

Darren Tay
This is interesting! What I've learned before was using video camera to record ourselves practicing the speech. I never thought that we actually can video record the audience to see their reaction to our speech. And it turns out that recording the audience during our speech are more effective since we can see their live reactions whether they are insterested or not. Now, I learn something new. Maybe I can use this method in the future.
