Most people thought that the United States wasn't allowing equality and liberty for everyone. So Abolitionists started speaking and writing about how awful slavery was and trying to convince the country to get rid of it. Some Abolitionists like Harriet Tubman started the underground railroad which was a network of safe houses for runaway slaves to get to freedom. They helped thousands of slaves to freedom and those who escaped helped others too. The movement swayed most of the north to anti-slavery views and it started some tension between the north and the south.
