The battle of Gettysburg lasted for a total of three days. The battle was fought by the Union and Confederacy. The Union troops were led by General George Meade and the Confederate troops were led by Robert E. Lee. The first shots were fired by the Union on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg. The next day more than 85,000 Union soldier faced 75,000 confederates. The center of the Union army line was on Cemetery Ridge. The Confederates were on Seminary Ridge. The fighting continued for another day. On July 3rd General George E. Pickett had ordered an all out attack on the center of the Union line. He had led about 15,000 confederates to attack towards Cemetery Ridge. Only a few hundred soldiers reached the Union lines but were quickly driven back. About 7,500 Confederates were killed or wounded. This attack came to be known as "Pickett's Charge". Both the Union and Confederacy suffered many casualties. After three days, the Union had won the battle.
