Before taking this class I did not know there were different theories on aging. I just thought it was a normal part of life we get older and our bodies naturally get weaker. I liked learning the plethora of different theories behind why we age. In the clinical setting I can use this knowledge to better care for my elderly patients by understanding what their needs are more than someone who is in their 20s.

Although I did notice that elderly people were not always respected in our culture this learning objective just reinforced that issue. I have seen it for myself before in the hospitals. My takeaway from this and how I can use it in the clinical setting is to be more self aware and understand that every person is capable and everyone was young at some point. We shouldn't age define us.

I have been familiar with chronic/acute conditions since I frequently worked with patients over the age of 50 and most of them had at least one chronic condition. As for atypical presentations of illnesses I was only familiar with confusion in elderly patients when they have a UTI. After learning about multiple different atypical presentations I feel I will be more aware when I have an elderly patient showing s/s and we are having trouble trying to figure it out. I will be able to research atypical signs and symptoms and make suggestions for something else than what it is appearing as.
