As I read pages 86-89, I reflected that these 5 ways can also be a BIG part of classroom climate. How can/do you apply these 5 ways in your classroom? (Feel free to just discuss 1 or more.)

One strength I feel I have is communicating quickly with students, parents, and staff. I think it is important to be prompt because it can promote effective communication and can potentially prevent miscommunication. For example, when communicating with a student about something they may have struggled on, I feel it is crucial to pull them in "real time" to review any misconceptions. If I were to wait, it could cause more confusion making communication more difficult. One way I could improve on communication would be using more of a variety of communication methods. Not all students like to be called and pulled back to talk about things they don't understand. Not all parents communicate through Class Dojo or email. Some staff members don't check their email religiously. It's best to know what works best for the people you are communicating with. Although it seems like a huge undertaking, it is a huge step to communicating more effectively.

Kori

When reflecting on this quote I can only think about situations where a student comes up for discussion with others. It is hard to not get feelings and other emotions involved in the situation at hand. Sometimes what you feel is best is not what is in the best interest of the situation at hand. That is something I always consider when deciding what should be done in a specific situation.

Kori

One reason I look forward to coming to work each day is the positivity of the work environment I work in. I have work in environments that are not so positive and it makes it hard to get up and go to work. Since I started at Shive, I have not had any trouble walking in the doors because I know I will be greeted by someone who will say hello with a smile. The climate in the building is amazing and it has been a breath of fresh air for me!

Kori

The two parts that really stuck out to me were trust and placing blame. It is important to establish your classroom as a safe place where everyone is valued. Not all children have a place where they feel that way, so it is imperative that their classroom is that place for them. More often than not, we are all guilty of placing blame on others, situations, or circumstances that cause us not to accomplish something we are tasked to do. It is important to shift from blaming someone or something else to determining the true reason it wasn't accomplished and what can be done to ensure that it won't happen again. One example that comes to mind is asking a student why an assignment isn't completed. Instead of accepting that they didn't have time, dig deeper to find out the why behind not having time. Was it because they had other assignments that they didn't understand? Was it because they got distracted? Finding the root of the issue and coming up with solutions is crucial to having a productive and positive classroom culture.

Kori

One strength I believe I possess when it comes to parents is that I am very understanding to their situation. I do not have a special needs child, but I can definitely empathize with them. I try to always offer assistance in anyway I can because they are dealing with so much and their lives are hectic and turned upside down. I guess one way I could improve communication with the parents is to tell them more about their child’s day. By the end of the day, I am rushing them out to the cars, buses, and vans or I have to drive a bus myself. I don’t really get a chance to tell the parents about the day. A lot of the kids can’t verbalize it themselves and I am sure that the parents would love to hear about their child’s day. I know I would.

Brodie

pages 82-83 One strength that I have with communicating with parents is that I feel like I can understand where they are coming from. When parents reach out to me with a question, I always respond quickly. I want them to feel like I am easy to reach and easy to talk with. One area I need to work on is when I receive communication from a parent in written form, not to always assume that the parent has written it with a "tone". In writing, you can not always be sure of the tone and I tend to assume it is in the worse possible tone ever.
