For each session, I place liquid deadlines within each session, but have hard deadlines at the end of each session. Once we are done with the session, any work not turned in for that session/theme can not be turned in. This helps them with understanding not just the necessity for deadlines, but it also gives them the opportunity to produce substantive writing and not just feel like they are "chugging out" assignments because they have a deadline.
