Hopefully those differences can pave the way for learning and growth. It's important to know what microcosm you have grown up in and in turn, be able to step outside of that and put yourself into someone else's - or at the least try to - so that you can open your mind to new understandings, problem solve as a team, and show empathy.

Not everyone you work with will become a best friend, but its important to respect one another and I think that starts with building relationships. In this role, I think we will have to earn the respect of our coworkers and I'm nervous about how I'm perceived before they have an opportunity to get to know me.

I think that we're often victims of giving a "first glance" at someone and letting that influence our immediate opinions. One glance doesn't allow you to see all that the person has gone through to get where they are. I don't necessarily think you need to keep a chip on your shoulder, though. It's important to give a good first impression by being sincere and genuine in your interactions. It's a balancing act, honestly.

As many people shared in one way or another, treat others the way you want to be treated. In other words, walk the walk, talk the talk, lead by example, etc. Growing up my PapPaw always said "Not everyone is as perfect as you are darling," and it may be my blonde hair or the adoration I had for him that caused me to not fully understand that sentiment until later in life. He wasn't saying I was perfect, he was saying people are different. This can lead to many misconceptions about a person when you don't really get to know someone. However, just recognizing that these differences exist is not enough to develop trusting relationships. There is a clear difference between respecting someone and trusting them. I believe trust only happens when a person believes he/she is valued and understood. More must be done to learn what those differences are and how they develop a person because they directly impact their actions. I think it starts by encouraging open and honest conversations. When trust is built, we can have conversations that challenge, encourage, and reflect others' perspectives.

As first generation my family emphasized the importance of hard work and doing any task to (almost) perfection. I see this reflected in how I conduct myself in my professional and personal life.
Our values solidify our interactions with others, our identity continuously changes with the interactions of others, and our culture defines the norms of those interactions. When interacting with others, it may be easier to form relationships with those of similar values/identities/cultures, but to truly grow we should create empathetic societies and relationships that are built around the diversity of these.
