"Out, damned spot! Out, I say!....The thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now?—What, will these hands ne'er be clean? .....Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, Oh, Oh!....." -Lady Macbeth Act 5 Scene 1

Lady Macbeth's guilt is subconscious and only comes out when she is unconscious. She isn't allowed to feel her guilty feelings or voice them out or else she and her husband would get in trouble and lose power. Lady Macbeth might not even realize how guilty she feels, due to considering herself powerful, hardened, and ruthless. The guilt is symbolized through the hallucination of the blood on her hands which she cannot seem to wash off. The guilt first drives her to sleepwalk, and then eventually to her death. Showing the effects of guilt on a human being.

"Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires."
-Macbeth, William Shakespeare

According to this quote, a person can tell if an action will cause them to feel guilty. Usually this feeling is used to persuade a person not to do something, but Macbeth's promise of being a king entices him more than guilt scares him. Often times people do not like to feel guilty, so they pretend what the did either was not wrong, did not happen, or put the blame on someone else. Macbeth here is ignoring his actions in as an attempt to stop the feeling. However guilt then internalizes in him and comes out as hallucinations.

“Chronic remorse, as all the moralists are agreed, is a most undesirable sentiment. If you have behaved badly, repent, make what amends you can and address yourself to the task of behaving better next time. On no account brood over your wrongdoing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean.”
― Aldous Huxley, Brave New World

According the Aldous Huxley the only way to get over the guilty feeling is to repent and try your best to make things right. Whether you have to make something up to the person you wronged or make something right with yourself. Guilt is a natural feeling and if not dealt with the right way it can lead to something disastrous. "Tolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean." This relates to Lady Macbeth's guilt and how she tries to clean herself and wash away the blood. However, according to Huxley, the reason she cannot wash it away and become clean is because she is not trying to make things right and recognize that she does feel guilty. This shows how guilt is not a lasting feeling.
