The Spartans set up camp eight miles north of the city and started burning the city's crops. Numerous small-scale skirmishes took place, but the current tyrant, Pericles, insisted that Athens avoid land battles.

In 415 BC Athens voted to invade Sicily. The city-state of Segesta had promised huge financial aid in return for assistance against its enemy Selinus. With a foothold in Sicily the Athenians would also gain a tactical advantage to attack Sparta, if war broke out again.

In the battle, a Spartan fleet under Lysander destroyed the Athenian navy. This effectively ended the war, since Athens could not import grain or communicate with its empire without control of the sea.

Under the poor rulership of Sparta’s tyrants, Athens eventually fell. Sparta did not, on the other hand, and when Philip II of Macedonia conquered Greece, he left Sparta alone. This proves the city-state kept its reputation of having a fearsome army.
