An assessment in only the student's second language gives an incomplete snapshot of their understanding.
Ensure that an ELL student has access to assessments in their first language prior to having them diagnosed with a Learning Disability. Bilingual assessments are key to making sure a student's struggles are not stemming solely from their misunderstanding of the second language.

1. Ensure scaffolded tasks when the student is starting out to ensure they understand what is being asked of them and are completing the task correctly.

2. Provide opportunities for students to discuss in small groups. ELLs are more likely to participate in discussions with small groups or partners than with the whole class.

3. Ensure you are using progress monitoring tools at least once a week to ensure students are progressing as they should be and to note any difficulties that may be related to an LD.

IEP Support
For ELLs who are diagnosed with LD, an IEP would look similar to any other identified student. However, some of the overall goals may be reduced, or accommodations would be made to include the use of the first language as a support.

Transition Plans
For any student with an IEP, a transition plan is necessary as they move from elementary to high school, or high school to post-secondary. This ensures a transfer of knowledge about the student so that the incoming school knows exactly how to support that student and where they are at in their learning.

Using the universal design for learning and differentiated instruction are two strategies that would assist ELLs in the classroom.

UDL, based on the idea that what is good for one is good for all students in the classroom might be something like creating a visual schedule to assist the ELLs in the classroom.

Differentiated instruction means providing students the opportunity to work from where they are in their learning. If students grasp concepts, they can work on an extension of the task, and those that need more time are afforded it.
