So often students write one sentence, and think that's enough. I love that you encourage them to expand on their beginnings. I love that they can reorder them in whatever order they want. I really loved starting with low-stakes writing sprints photos. Very accessible to all students, and a great way to get them thinking. Great work!! Thank you for sharing!

I am thinking that combining strategies could be useful in many parts of student writing. I want to try this with endings as well, or descriptions, or even discussing evidence. This approach lowers the stress of trying to come up with the perfect idea using just the right structure. This is also an idea that teachers from a variety of content areas could use. I plan to use this method for my own writing! This is such a non-threatening way to teach the elements of revision, and it gives students the tools to take ownership of their writing.

I now clearly understand how I could use these activities in a class-- your presentation has me making all sorts of connections to my context. Although my students do a very different type of writing, it's the process of them having to make choices and develop thoughts (which I think the lead activity also does) that will transfer to later contexts. The fact that each part of the lead is a new idea is what pushes their thinking.
