Hawai'i has been my home for the past 4 years. These years have been a period of growth and achievement for me. During this time, I have worked as a certified surgical technologist before going back to school to earn an Associates of Liberal Arts, and gained acceptance into the very prestigious Associate Degree in Nursing program at Kapi'olani Community College. Prior to moving to Hawai'i, I had the honor of serving 5 years in the U.S. Navy. In the navy, I became a Hospital Corpsman and a certified surgical technologist. I am very proud to say that I served at the President's hospital, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Washington, DC. I was able to work with wounded warriors and even executive members of government (ironically, under the Obama administration). Although I am proud to have served my country while in the navy, it was never to be a life-defining experience for me. I love to volunteer and help out in the community. For me, that formula consists of compassion, accountability, and professionalism. Nursing is about helping people. Care must be taken for their clients, colleagues, and for themselves, in order to provide effective care. Nurses are accountable for providing the highest standard of care. Continuous learning and empirical research are methods that should be employed in order to stay current with evidence-based practice. Nurses hone their professional identity over time. This is done through experience, willingness to learn, and openness to diversity.
