Now let's start off with something that I'm pretty sure many of us can relate to, food! Food here in the Philippines is just amazing, From the traditional dishes that we make like Kare-Kare, Lechon Baboy, and Liempo, to street foods like Proben, Isaw, and Pastil.

Moving on, we have sports. Here in the Philippines, we love to play sports, especially Basketball. There's also boxing, volleyball, and our own nation sport, Arnis, but basketball is the one we Filipinos love the most. Personally though, I take more interest in boxing or martial arts in general, especially with a legend like Manny Pacquiao making the country proud.

Of course, we can't forget about music, I mean, I can't really imagine anyone who doesn't like music, and I am for sure no exception to that statement. Of course, that also applies to us Filipinos as well, especially with OPM (Original Pilipino Music) having artists/bands such as Ben&Ben and IV of Spades bringing us good vibes with their music!

Speaking of music, here in the Philippines, we also happen to have a deep love and passion for karaoke. Whenever it happens, I always have fun doing karaoke with friends and family, either trying my best to sound the best to flex or trying my best to sound the worst to make everyone laugh.

Finally, we have something that's a little less common for us Filipinos to enjoy but still quite as popular, Anime. Now a lot of us has seen anime when we were kids before, like Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, or Bleach, but for me, even to this day, I still love it. There are many interesting stories that anime can bring that all feel just as refreshing, and those are exactly the kinds of things that keep me hooked to this day.

Of all the things that is embedded within our culture in the Philippines, boxing is the sport I'm most in love with. I'm sure many of us feel the same way as well on some level. Just being able to cheer on your favorite boxer, watch them train, watch them fight, and watch them win, always feels so motivating and empowering. Here in the Philippines, there was no greater feeling of empowerment and motivation than anytime that Manny Pacquiao took the world stage and fought out there, with all of us watching as he fought for himself and the Philippines. Anytime he fought, most, if not all of us, would stop and watch him fight his way to the top, and that feeling of unity as everyone cheers on for the same man is just one of the best feelings you can ever experience.

Uses and Gratification Theory: How it ties into Boxing

In the analysis of the effects that boxing has over people, first I would like to discuss Uses and Gratification Theory. Basically, this theory suggests that people control over the kind of entertainment they wish to consume based on their needs and wants through media or other means.

For example, in the context of boxing, like I said earlier, anytime that Manny Pacquiao fought, most of us would stop what we were doing just to watch him fight. Anytime that we did, we felt excitement, intensity, empowerment, motivation, patriotism, unity, and so much more. In a way, we choose to watch him fight because we want to feel some sort of inspiration and strength, or maybe even just a sense of unity with our own country.

Conclusion

Boxing is no exception to the principles involved in Uses and Gratification Theory. Many who watch boxing, as I've stated earlier, do so in search of something. Whether that be inspiration, motivation, or unity, it is something that many of us can relate to, thus, is something that many of us come to seek as well. I'm sure that all of us, in the pursuit of something greater than ourselves, want to search for a version that is better than what we are now. With boxing, it gives us at the very least a glimpse of what we can accomplish if we train hard enough at something and fight for it with everything we've got. That, I believe, is the true essence of boxing. It's not just some sport where two guys have to beat each other up, it's a sport where the winner takes it all, where both fighters stand up to the stage to fight for everything they stand for and a sport where they get to prove to everyone watching that they made it. Knowing this, in our lives, we could use inspiration like this to keep moving forward through all the pain and hardships that come our way, so that we too can one day prove that we made it.
