Before the competition begins her sponsor, Crown Prince Dorian, gives her the cover of a jewel thief to not show her as the threat she is. She is told to stay in the middle of the rankings so she doesn't place a target on her back. Being the only woman, the other competitors harass and belittle her constantly. Celaena is prideful and knows that she's better than every man there, going against orders Celaena ranks first in the first trial the competitors compete in. “The target was little more than a blur of color, so far back that its bull’s-eye was a grain of sand in the vastness of the room. - The arrow hit the absolute center, obliterating the black dot. They stopped laughing.” (Page 119).
From this point on she has a target on her back and one competitor, Cain, watches her closely.

The tomb belongs to a long passed Adarlan Queen, Elena Galathynius Havilliard. This is the start of a long journey of acceptance for Celaena as she has to start facing her past. Celaena knows she is bound for greatness yet refuses to accept her destiny. She is scared of the responsibility and only wishes to care for herself, not for the good of the world. "Elena took a step toward her. 'You could rattle the stars,' she whispered. 'You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That's what scares you the most.' She walked to Celaena, and it was all the assassin could do to keep from backing out of the tomb and running away." (Page 399).

Erilea used to be a continent infused with magic, with mythical creatures roaming the ground. The King of Adarlan constructed three towers on the continent, after the last was complete magic vanished from the land. The King outlawed all forms of magic and burned ancient libraries to keep people from learning it. Celaena comes from a long line of powerful magic users, however she hides this part of herself after magic became outlawed. “She remembered the beauty of the world before the King of Adarlan had ordered so much of it burned. Now there was nothing left for her, nor would there ever be.” (Page 29).

A more central location of the novel is the Glass Castle, home to Adarlans royal family. While Celaena is there she has the cover of Lady Lillian to fit in with the other women of the court. This shows Celaena's love for finer things but also her dislike towards people who do everything for men. This is why she becomes fast friends with foreign Princess Nehemia Ytger. The two are found reading and sparring together. " 'Do you believe I'm going to kill her? Why would I kill the one person in this castle who isn't a babbling idiot?' She gave him a look that suggested he was part of the majority." (Page 132).

Celaena struggles with her self identity a lot in this novel. She wear many names and none of them are 100% hers. She tells herself every day that she will not be afraid but by avoiding her past she is breaking that very promise. Celaena fears her destiny, and by avoiding her past she avoids her future.

A large part of what is keeping Celaena from accepting her destiny for greatness are her self-worth and identity issues. On top of bearing so many names Celaena does not feel worthy of greatness due to her bloody history as an assassin. Nehemia knows that Celaena's future will be glorious and gives her a new name that won't carry shame from her past. " ‘I name you Elentiya.’ She kissed the assassin’s brow. ‘I give you this name to use with honor, to use when other names grow too heavy. I name you Elentiya, ‘Spirit That Could Not Be Broken.’” (Page 321).

Until Celaena believes in herself, she will never be ready for her destiny. Most times you are the biggest obstacle in your own way. Everyone around you can believe in you, but if you don't believe in yourself you will forever be stuck.
