1. Understand the Test Format and Content

Familiarize Yourself with the Structure: The Praxis exams vary by subject, but generally include multiple-choice questions, constructed-response questions (essays), and possibly performance tasks. The PECT exams are all multiple choice. Make sure you know what types of questions to expect.

Review the Content Outline: ETS and Pearson provide a content outline for each exam, detailing the specific topics that will be covered. This helps you know what to focus your study efforts on.

Use Praxis Test Preparation Materials: Invest in official Praxis or PECT study guides or take practice tests. These will help you get a sense of question formats, timing, and areas where you may need additional review.

2. Time Management

Pace Yourself: Each section of the Praxis exam is timed, so it's important to keep track of time during the test. Divide your time roughly according to the number of questions, and make sure to leave time to review your answers at the end.

Don't Get Stuck on Hard Questions: If you find a question particularly difficult, mark it and move on. Answer the easier questions first, then return to the more challenging ones once you’ve given yourself time to think.

Skip and Return Strategy: If a question is taking too long to answer, make an educated guess, skip it, and return to it later if time permits.

3. Practice Critical Reading and Question Analysis

Read Each Question Carefully: Ensure you understand what is being asked before choosing an answer. Pay attention to keywords like “not,” “always,” or “except,” which can change the meaning of the question.

Identify Key Terms: Underline or mentally highlight key terms and concepts in each question. This helps you focus on the essential details without getting distracted by extraneous information.

Eliminate Obvious Wrong Answers: In multiple-choice questions, start by eliminating the clearly incorrect answers. This will increase your chances of choosing the correct answer, even if you're unsure.

4. Use Process of Elimination

Look for Contradictions: In some multiple-choice questions, you can eliminate answers by identifying contradictions. If a choice seems inconsistent with what you know about the topic, it's likely incorrect.

Narrow Down Options: If you’re not sure about an answer, try to narrow it down to two choices. Even if you can’t definitively choose between them, you’ll have improved your chances of guessing correctly.

5. Make Educated Guesses

Use Knowledge of Teaching Strategies: For questions about teaching practices, think about the most effective instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, and methods for assessing student learning. Your teaching knowledge is a great asset.

Answer Every Question: If you are unsure of an answer, always make an educated guess rather than leaving it blank. You won’t lose points for incorrect answers on the Praxis, so answering gives you a chance to score points.

Organize your response with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion to ensure clarity and logical flow.

Be Specific and Relevant: When answering essay questions, stick to the question and provide specific examples to back up your points. Focus on demonstrating your knowledge of teaching practices, theory, and research.

Don’t dwell on any mistakes you think you’ve made.
