The 3 Principles of Interior Design

Hiller, S. and Fox, M. "The 3 Principles of Interior Design." HGTV, https://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/design-101/the-3-principles-of-interior-design

In this Article, Shari Hiller and Matt Fox describe some of the most important, or "key" standards of Interior Design and how to decorate your home or building. Hiller and Fox simplify this huge category into three main principles, "function, mood, and personality."

Fortunately though, even as Hiller and Fox broke this wide subject into 3 categories, they actually explain many aspects inside each of these 3 categories. I like how they did this because then I can use this source to study one category each day, but learn about technically, one third of everything that Hiller and Fox think important about Interior Design. Then this gives me the opportunity I was hoping for, which is to test the techniques I learn, by making a model, and design a few examples.

I wanted this opportunity so that when I get to my final product, I will have examples that I can use. Also, I will have enough experience and practice, that I will be able to know how to do each thing. One example of this from the article is , "The mood or feeling of a room is created by your choice of colors, the style of furnishings, the amount of texture and pattern you choose and your accessories." So for this technique, I thought I would need to study what colors made people feel, and then practice designing certain colors into rooms, such as warmer colors in the Kitchen, Etc.

They are, according to Ms. Paper color, furniture, windows, walls, floors, ceilings, lighting, and storage.

As each of these topics collectively cover a lot, I have recently thought of the Idea to compare both of my Interior Design Books, and like I would with making a recipe, I could just look at what I think is absolutely crucial, and then just use those techniques, instead of modeling each one like I originally planned. Although this, to, would take quite a bit of time.

On the other hand, this approach would be much more detailed, giving me only the best, or in other words, the professional manner.

McAlester, Virgingia S. A Field Guide to American Houses.
https://www.amazon.com/Field-Guide-American-Houses-Revised/dp/0375710825

This book, a personal favorite of mine, is one that I used in my genius hour project last year, contains every reoccurring type of house across America (or past ones), thanks to Virginia Savage McAlester.

Like I mentioned earlier, I used this book last year and really liked it because it uses so much detail, so many great examples of the houses, and explains each style so well. Yet it is still short enough that it doesn't loose my attention. When I used it last year, I would just read about all types, study into each one a little bit, and then choose a few of my favorites to study in much more detail. Then I finally chose one style and stuck with it until my final product.

On the other hand, like this year, instead of doing what I did last year (reading about every single style, studying each one, choosing my top few to study deeper, then finally resting on one), I will flip through the book and just choose one style for my final product, due to my main focus being Interior Design.

Like I said earlier, even though the main part of my project is Interior Design, I am including Architecture into it for my final product. The part of the introduction that convinced me to choose this book was this: "The bulk of this book is organized by the changing chronology of these American architectural fashions or styles, for they provide the most effective framework for identifying and understanding American houses." I will use the book this way because the direction that I have been heading in my project so far is modern style, so I wanted to stick with that on the Architecture section, too.

"___" - pg. 5 of A Field Guide to American Houses
