I never knew the origin of time or the abbreviations of am and pm. Our time zone is called Arabian Standard time. I notice that time zones aren't always divided up equally. China for example, has one time zone and is about the size of the U.S.A. which has four. Additionally, I notice that countries change times. For example, Greece does daylight saving in March and so the time is the same as Qatar (Gmt +2) But in October Greece changes back to one hour behind Qatar. Qatar doesn't change time. But because GMT becomes either +3 or +2 sometimes it can be quite confusing.

The sun can only make it day on one side of Earth at one time. If it is noon in Texas, it would be midnight on the opposite side of the world. I think people came up with time zones because sundials would have only been able to tell what time it was in the area it was in. Also, people wouldn't easily be able to travel to the other side of the world to tell people how to set their clocks.
