         <title>Charles Dickens * His full name was Charles John Huffman Dickens but his nickname was Boz.* He was born in Portsmouth on the 7th February 1812 and died of a stroke on the  9th June 1870* He had ten children called: Charles Jr,Mary,Kate,Walter,francis, Alfred,Sydney,Henry,Dora and Edward.* He wrote 15 novels and 5 novellas (short stories)* His career was a journalist before being an author.                         Victorian London.* It was always foggy and the thick fog was a slight green colour so the Victorians called it pea Souper.* Rents were high so poor family&#39;s ended up living in one room together.* Poor Victorians would make their children work at an early age or make them homeless to fend for themselves.* There was no plumbing in the bathrooms and the poor shared outside toilets with lots of people and sewage ran down the streets.* Poor family&#39;s had little food and lived on mainly bread,dripping and vegetables and usually had meat only on Sunday.</title>

His first ever published story was called "A dinner at poplar walk" published in monthly magazine.<br>5. He wrote 5 Christmas books named, A Christmas carol(1843), The chimes(1844), The cricket on the hearth(1845), The battle of life(1846) and the haunted man and the ghosts bargain (1848)<br>Victorian times.<br>1 Queen Victoria reigned in Britain from 1837-1901, and the time that she reigned is generally known as the Victorian period.<br>2.The population surged during the 19th century, from about 1 million in 1800 to over 6 million a century later&nbsp;<br>3. Many poor children lived in tiny country cottages or in city slums&nbsp;<br>4. Many children worked, while other were to sick and hungry to play<br>5. Yet most poor children still managed to make some fun.          <description><![CDATA[<div>BCharles was born on 7th February 1812 in Portsmouth.<br>Dickens came from a poor family but was lucky enough to go to school.<br>Unfortunately, after hi farther was prisoned for having bad depts, Charles was forced to leave school and work in a blacking factory (a shoe polish factory). He worked for three years.&nbsp;<br>Dickens started to write as a journalist.<br>He died in in 1870 on the 9th June, he had a stroke after completing a full day's work on his novel in progress, Edwin Drood.&nbsp;<br><br>Victorian times&nbsp;<br>Queen Victoria reigned in Britain from 1837 until 1901.&nbsp;<br>There was no electricity back then so used candles and gas lamps for light. There was no cars in the Victorian times so some people walked, traveled by boat, train or used coach horses to move from palace to place .the number of people living in Britain more than doubled from 16 million to 37million, causing a huge demand for food, clothes and housing. This lead to millions of people living in poverty. Even though there was millions of poor people, many house holds had a servant/servants.          <description><![CDATA[<div>An old toothpick Dickens cleaned his teeth with got over £5,500 at auction in 2009.<br><br><br>Between 1837 and 1852 Dickens wife Catherine gave birth to 10 children.<br><br><br>He gave each of his children nicknames such as Lucifer Box, Plorn and Chickenstalker<br><br><br>Dickens kept a pet raven named Grip, which he had stuffed when it died in 1841<br><br><br>Dickens managed to survive the famous rail crash on 9 June 1865 in which 40 people were killed. He died five years later to the day.<br><br><br>Dickens slept facing north, believing it would improve his writing<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>The Poor<br>had few luxuries.<br>ate food they could afford to buy much&nbsp;<br>worked long hours&nbsp;<br>lived in damp, filthy conditions.<br>Many children died of disease.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>A loaf of bread cost about 3 d (pennies). Most of the week's money was spent on bread leaving little for other necessities. The weekly shop could also include milk, cheese and potatoes. Poor families could only afford meat once a week - this would have be saved for Sunday lunch.<br><br><br>Many people could not afford the rents that were being charged and so they rented out space in their room to one or two lodgers who paid between twopence and fourpence a day.<br><br><br>Many cases of death caused by starvation and destitution were reported. One example of such a report will suffice. In 1850 an inquest was held on a 38 year old man whose body was reported as being little more than a skeleton, his wife was described as being ‘the very personification of want’ and her child as a ‘skeleton infant’(4).<br><br><br>There were children living with their families in these desperate situations but there were also numerous, homeless, destitute children living on the streets of London.Many children were turned out of home and left to fend for themselves at an early age and many more ran away because of ill treatment.<br><br><br>Many children lived by stealing and to the Victorians they must have seemed a very real threat to society. Something had to be done about them to preserve law and order.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
