There are two main reasons for why John Brown went through with his actions. One, John Brown wanted to get revenge on "Border Ruffians", pro slavery men from Missouri that came to Kansas to attack abolitionists. Second, as a major abolitionist, John Brown believed that his actions were justified as a means to ending slavery, and that this would help to inspire a slave revolt that would end slavery in the United States.

John's Brown actions demonstrated the divide in the country's opinions. In the North, where most of the population were abolitionists, many of the people supported and agreed with John Brown's actions, saying that the way to end slavery successfully is taking direct action like John Brown had. John Brown had even been given money and supplies from well-known abolitionists in order to continue the fighting in "Bleeding Kansas". However, the South believed that John Brown was a terrorist. The South also argued that the abolitionists were just as guilty for the instances occurring as pro slavery people were even if they refused to admit it.

Congress' actions to the "Bleeding Kansas" incident showed favoring to the abolitionist movement. Following the breakout of "Bleeding Kansas", the pro slavery group created a document called the Lecompton constitution which allowed slavery in Kansas. However, this constitution was rejected. The abolitionist group created the Wyandotte constitution, banning slavery in Kansas. This constitution was accepted by Congress and passed in 1859.
