So because of this idea, people at that time invented a variety of cruel therapies. For example, cold water rinses the patient's head to calm down their "crazy brain." Later, the hospital will also let the patient soak in a hot bath for hours or even days. The doctor will wrap the patient tightly with a wet sheet and then wrap it in another layer of rubber cloth to let them sweat for hours. Doctors have a variety of seemingly scientific explanations for such treatments: alleviating brain congestion and releasing toxins that cause mental illness.
