In the 19th and early 20th century, women were restricted from certain rights such as that to vote. Women were expected to stay at home, cook, clean, do laundry, and take care of their child. They weren’t expected to socialize, but rather spend time in the house. They generally did not have jobs as they were always home. Women were also expected to know a lot about music, singing, drawing, dancing, and most Importantly learn to present themselves elegantly with their tone of voice, the way they walk, etc. Women who shared their interest in learning and acquiring knowledge were frowned upon by their male counterparts. It was considered unfeminine to be smart.

In the early days of treating mental illness, it was thought that the method of showering can stimulate the discharge of toxins from the brain. So because of this idea, people at that time invented a variety of cruel therapies. For example, cold water rinses the patient's head to calm down their "crazy brain." Later, the hospital will also let the patient soak in a hot bath for hours or even days. The doctor will wrap the patient tightly with a wet sheet and then wrap it in another layer of rubber cloth to let them sweat for hours. Doctors have a variety of seemingly scientific explanations for such treatments: alleviating brain congestion and releasing toxins that cause mental illness.
Siyuan Huang
