The subject of this painting is one of Neel's neighbors. This painting is expressive, and uses dull reds, yellow, blue and violet as well as black, gray and white. The mood of the work is calm, and the subject looks away from the viewer. The figure is fairly realistcally painted, but has elongated fingers, which Neel often does in her paintings. The color in the background has a flattening effect, and focusses your attention on the woman and the mood in the painting.
