Peer Impact

One example of the importance of peer influence is clearly visible when Jude is confronted by his boyfriend about his poor attitude. In the episode Jude is at a meet and greet for his fans, and an awkward "nerd," approaches him and the other streamers to ask about a gaming technique. Jude has no problem talking to the kid but when he walks away, Judes friend comments about how lame it is that most of their viewers are nerds. Jude looks at his friend and realizes the kid is only standing a few feet away staring as the conversation happens, saying nothing as the kid leaves.
In the text, chapter four mentions the "Transformation of the Nerds," which ties to influence of peers (p.148). Jude is a "gamer" and throughout the show he has gone from being an awkward kid at one point being bullied to someone who has been accepted by a clique. The reason Jude does not immediately respond to his friends ridicule of the kid is because he has traditionally been part of the unpopular kid. According to the text, "as opposed to middle school, where there were only two groups- the popular and the unpopular- in high school, there were more socially acceptable groups with which to affiliate" (p.148). In this instance it is also his boyfriends influence which helps him realize he's acting like a bully and changes his mind.

Impact of Family

Throughout the episode Lena and Stef are counseling the kids and giving them advice as well as listening to what the kids have to say. In the example with Jude, he tells Lena he's been streaming again and while she reminds him he isn't supposed to be doing that, she also asks if he is going to correct his actions. Lena and Stef both exhibit authoritative attitudes towards parenting, whole Lena is more on the indulgent side and Stef leans more towards authoritarian. According to the text, parents who raise their kids in authoritative households, "are more psychologically mature...responsible, self-assured, creative, intellectually curious, socially skilled and academically successful" (p.116). The moms do their best in this episode as well as throughout the season to steer the kids in the right direction while giving them boundaries and rules to follow.

Media Impact

The most overt form of media interaction seen is the idea of Jude's streaming, his moms do not really understand his use of the internet, which can be explained by the digital divide (p.224). Callie also uses media to fight for her cause. While Callie tries to keep her friends from getting deported, she uses many media sources to gain information and resources to arm herself and help her friend. While the texts mentions that most teens use media as, "an efficient way to stay in touch with friends" (p.231) the show demonstrates that it can have other practical uses.
