Due to a reactor mistake, huge amounts of radioactive chemicals were released into the atmosphere. Immediately afterwards, several died of radiation poisoning and others developed thyroid cancer. During his time in office, he tripled the size of the national forest reserve. Establishing the first national park in Crater Lake, Oregon, he created the National Park Service. The term environmental conservatism refers to practices that ensure sustainability. To make such sustainability possible, we must work to lessen our adverse effect on Earth's well-being. While some of the aforementioned events were disastrous for the environment, they were key in establishing standards to prevent such events from happening again in the future. For example, after Chernobyl, higher expectations were put into place regarding the regulations of a nuclear power plant. Standards and regulations are enforced by organizations such as those mentioned, who also conduct research to prevent such tragedies. These organizations help to facilitate a goal of conservatism. People like Rachel Carson and Teddy Roosevelt were important because they raised awareness for the need for such a goal.
