During the march, thousands of Indians followed Gandhi from his religious retreat near Ahmedabad to the Arabian Sea. The purpose of the march was to the defy the British ruling where Indians were not allowed to collect or sell salt, which was a staple in the indian diet, and were forced to buy it from the British. The march ended at the sea where Gandhi made salt. I think this protest was a great way for the Indians to get the mineral as they had journeyed for a long time to get what they needed and therefore earned it. They forged till the sea to reap their reward. This a great way of protesting.

This would often cause the government to respond harshly. One example of the way the government responded was the Kent State Massacre in 1970. Four students were killed and nine suffered not fatal injuries.  This was the first time when the public received updates on  the war.  But the war did not end until 1975, even with the protest.
