What did I learn from this first section about and for myself as a teacher?

One thing that I learned in the first part of this course is how technology within schools is inevitable, and how we live in a society today that is based around technology and the use of social media. This can be related to teaching because it is important to remember this fact and to not try to fight the use of technology in the class room. In Eric Sheninger's Ted Talk he stated " Social Media is the world. Yet we do not allow students to use a tool that is embedded in every facet of society. Pedagogy first, technology second " (6:12) Social media and technology shouldn't be fought, but used as a tool in teaching.

Pros of using Technology in the classroom

1. The use of technology and social media fosters creativity within the classroom. "Students can create artifacts of learning to demonstrate conceptual mastery in so many different ways." Often students creativity is compressed it better fit the mold and this only re-shown by having one way or determining whether they are learning ( the use of exclusively testing ) Technology can be used for students to creatively learn and show their understanding

2. It prepares students to enter the world after high school, and can be applied to life out side of the education system.“ And another big disconnect for our students is the very tools that they are using outside of school are blocked, banned, and prohibited. When they bring the tools of their age to school., we punish them.” (3: 33) Through not being able to use technology in the place where students spend the majority of their time, school is set far away from the real world and students experience a shock one they graduate. Allowing use of technology for learning better prepares them for life after graduation.

3. Technology used while in school also makes sense with keeping up with the age that we live in. Technology is a huge part of life and should be seen in the classroom.

Cons of using Technology in the classroom

1. When allowing the use of social media in schools students are more exposed to peer pressure and the idea of being exactly like their peers. " Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011 " (Twenge).

2. Similarly to the cons mentioned above. the use of technology has not only changed how students perceive things, but it its has also increased the competition among students by allowing school and students to compare them selves to other. Additionally as a result students and schools are increasing teh amount of work give. "eighth-, 10th-, and 12th-graders in the 2010s actually spend less time on homework than Gen X teens did in the early 1990s. (High-school seniors headed for four-year colleges spend about the same amount of time on homework as their predecessors did.) " ( Twenge)

3. Apps such as Quizlet and Chegg allows for students to not actually learn the material given to them, and allows for cheating to occur. When technology is used in this way it effect the understanding of whether or not students have an actually conceptual understanding of the stuff being taught.

Secondly, this first section also taught me that testing is not the only way a student can demonstrate learning or conceptual understanding. Often times students are labeled as a " bad student" or " not smart" if they fail to do well on test, when they could understand the material perfectly. I would like to apply this idea to my classroom by not using only testing as a way for students to show me that they understand the topics being covered. Instead, I would like to allow them to express this knowledge in other ways.

Additionally, I also learned that while technology can be used as tool for teaching it should still be monitored while in the class room and students should not use it a way to avoid learning. Through the creation of apps and websites like Quizlet students can use technology to bypass gaining an actual understanding of a topic.

Lastly in this first section of the course I learned that I would like to incorporate technology into my classroom in a way that will prepare my students to enter the world after they graduate. Sheninger even said in his Ted Talk: " We can turn school environment into places that reflect the real world " (9:56) I think that by connecting technology and the really world my students will be more prepared for life after high school.
