I am the son of Mina and Behor Mordehay, I was nine years old when Bulgaria allied itself with Germany. I had a younger sister, Lida who was five. My family owned a large store that sold textiles and clothing. We lived in the largest building in the city. It was so large that we had to rent out the first floor to the police department. We even had the town jail in our basement. We were quite well-off. Each of us had our own nanny, and there were other servants to do the laundry and cleaning. We were  well-respected by our non-Jewish neighbors, and all of my playmates were non-Jews.  Because there were so few Jews in Ihtiman, my family did not feel the brunt of the harsh anti-Jewish measures passed by the Bulgarian government in 1941. My  parents were forced to wear the yellow star required by the government, but me and my sister were exempt from wearing it because we were children. However, me and Lida were not permitted to attend public school during the 1942-43 school year, because they were Jews. our cousin tutored us at home. My many relatives from Sofia were given shelter in our home.  By January 1944, massive allied bombing of Bulgaria began, and plans to deport us Jews were completely shelved.
