My students are tested on a words per minute passage and a MAZE passage. I noticed that my students were not making much progress or they were not trying. Each student is on a different level passage to meet their needs.

I shared with my students how many words they read per minute and how many MAZE words they answered correctly. My students then set a personal goal on how many words they would be able to read. They also want to be able to move up a reading level on their passages. When a student makes progress week to week they receive a prize and also when they reach their goal. The students have become very competitive with themselves in order to reach their goal.

My job is to build strong relationships with my students so they are comfortable and have a strong rapport with me. I think it is important to show and have interest in the students likes and dislikes.
