It was made in response to a heartbreak and it explores Olivia's anguish about her ex-partner repeating things they did in his new relationship ("Deja Vu").

The piece was obviously directed to one of Olivia's past exes who moved on with someone similar as her. It is unsure who it is about specifically, but it is pressumed to be about Joshua Basset. Another audience could be the people who went throught a similar event, a breakup or being replaced by a person similar to you.

"The beginning of the song is slow and sweet, gazing upon the fun memories and reliving the moments in the past" (Harris). In this song, Olivia mainly uses the Ethos and Pathos appeals to connect/persuade her audience. 

The ethos appeal is used by speakers to establish their credibility, knowledge, and their good moral character. Speakers also use this appeal to build trust with readers. In the song "Deja Vu" we can see that Olivia establishes all of those aspects. In the lyrics "We kinda do sound the same/ Do you get deja vu when she's with you?" a character is given to Olivia and the new girlfreind. It lets us know that both of them have similar personalities. Deja vu is a felling as though a person has lived the present before. It is used by speakers to establish emotions and imagination. In the song, Olivia uses the pathos appeal the most to convey her emotions to her audience.
The lyrics "Being annoying/ Singing in harmony/ I hate to think that I was just your type" are used in the song to express some of Olivia's feelings. In the first lyric mentioned, Olivia is expressing how the new girlfriend is acting, annoying, and she feels irritated by the action. Since both of them are similar, she might also be refferring to herself. In the next lyric, Olivia expresses the feeling of peace. She is revealing how the new girlfriend is "singing in peace" without worrying about anything going on around her. With the last lyric, Olivia is expressing to her audience how she feels about being replaced with a person who is almost identical as her.
