Depending on the style, the choreography and the customs associated with them, the Macedonian dances can be divided into five regional groups: western, southwest, southern, north and east.
Macedonian dances are numerous and varied. Their names are derived from place names, personal names, crafts, animals, instruments, the type of dance, the way of keeping and the customs.
Dances are usually played during religious holidays (Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, St. George, Spasovden, St. Peter's Day), public holidays, weddings, usually at the church, in front of the churches, schools and houses.
The dyke can be open and closed, and the players hold hands, or for shoulders, or for harnesses, either with their hands or with their hands facing down. All players play the same way, except for the regular player and the last player, who can perform additional steps and moves. They played at the end of the village, where they were separated with their loved ones before getting on the road to the unknown exhausting work in a foreign country. But over time, it grows into an anthem of not only migrant work but also of all the weight and bitterness gathered in the Macedonian souls through the innumerable centuries of slavery.
